Capital punishment: ATC hands death penalty for bombing

Two other suspects arrested by the police, Atif and Zahid, were acquitted by the court.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Monday awarded death sentence along with life imprisonment to a man accused for a bomb blast that injured two people in November 2011.


The accused, Sher Gayas, who is a resident of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), was also fined Rs300,000 and his property was confiscated.

Two other suspects arrested by the police, Atif and Zahid, were acquitted by the court.

ATC-I judge Justice Raja Shahbaz announced the verdict while hearing the case which lasted for nearly a year, with several witnesses testifying and being cross-examined by lawyers in the court.

According to sources, the accused confessed to the crime during investigations carried out by senior police officials.

The blast occurred near a mosque in Gilgit city in November 2011. Assailants pelted a hand grenade from their vehicle in to a grocery shop near Punyal Road.

A salesperson at the store, Ibrahim was injured, while a nearby car was also partially damaged.
