Art delineation: Hassan displays oil works

As many as 39 art pieces by Mian Ijazul Hassan, a former professor at the National College of Arts, have been displayed at the Lahore Art Gallery.

The show opened on December 21 and will run until January 19. This is a solo exhibition in Lahore after nearly 10 years.

The works, all oil on canvas, include some landscapes. Others depict the recent political upheavals in Pakistan. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Hassan said some of the paintings were recent, while work on some paintings had started four to five years ago. Hassan said his work was a mix.

“I have painted some sites I have had the chance to visit. One can find elements of nature in my work as well as figurative delineation,” he said.

Hassan graduated from the National College of Arts in 1958 and went onto study at the Royal College of Arts in London.

He, later, studied English literature at the University of Cambridge.

He taught art at the NCA between 1965 and 1975.

He said it was refreshing to return to a solo exhibition in Lahore after a long time.

In the last few years, he has held shows in Jakarta, Washington DC, New York, London and Japan.

Art critic Quddus Mirza said Hassan’s works stood out on account of his distinct approach, diverse imagery and unique visual vocabulary.
