In my opinion, the best piece of writing by a Pakistani political leader is Dearest Daughter, the last letter written by ZAB to BB on her twenty-fifth birthday. It is written as a father, yet by a father who is also, perhaps, the greatest leader Pakistan has ever had. Read it and weep, not only because ZAB was ‘murdered’ soon after. Weep, not only because no Pakistani leader today can write or speak with this eloquence. Never mind that when it was written he had been in solitary confinement for 12 months and in the death cell for three. Weep, the daughter to whom it was addressed was to be murdered and the father knew that she probably would be.
There is disturbing prescience in that letter. Writing about Indira Gandhi and BB he writes, “One thing you have in common; both of you are equally brave. Both of you are made of pure damascene steel. But where will your talent take you? Normally it should take you to the very top. But we are living in a society where talent is a drawback and suffocating mediocrity an asset… if things do not change, there will be nothing left to change. Either power must pass to the people or everything will perish.” Nothing changed, suffocating mediocrity won, at least that round.
They never gave BB the chance to write that last letter. Yet, the message seemed to have been communicated and communicated well. I do not claim to be objective on the matter; neither do I feel the need to be objective on murder. Differences in political leaning and grievances with this government aside, Bilawal Bhutto spoke with moral clarity and fearlessness, a phenomenon becoming rarer by the day. Who else today can mention the Bashir Bilour, Sher-e-Punjab Salmaan Taseer, Shahbaz Bhatti or even Malala without apologetic fumbling? One major criticism that whiskered veterans can find is that he is ‘too young’? And that somehow is supposed to be a bad thing. Bhagat Singh only lived for all of 24 years. One would expect that ‘national’ political leaders twice his age would have been ashamed at their failure to condemn in the same tone and lucidity the murderers of Taseer, Bhatti and those who attempted to kill Malala. Yet, they have the nerve to mock him for being young. They did that with BB. The same frustration, the same burning is palpable today; the response now as it was then is “Dilan teer bija”. She was supposed to be too young to take on Ziaul Haq and his cohorts. She did and defeated them or at least went down fighting.
A more serious criticism is that of dynastic politics. Let us not pretend now that almost all politics in Pakistan is not dynastic. Those, whose kids are not old enough, have brothers and brothers-in-law at the helm. Admittedly, this is no excuse. Yet, it might be instructive to look at this dynasty. Is it a coincidence that all members of a family (barring one) are murdered? Even now, only members of PPP and the ANP are murdered. It is not because of their ‘corruption’ and ‘poor governance’; they have been punished and still continue to be punished for their courage. Whatever their other faults maybe, they die for affirming their resolve of looking the terrorists in the eye and not backing down. Unfortunately for them, and for us, we live in a country where cowardice is a virtue and valour punishable by death. In the words of Faiz, “Nisar mein teri gallion pay aay watan, ke jahan chali hai rasm kay koi na sar utha kay challay,” (“I give my life to your alleys, O nation, where custom now dictates that one walk with head bowed”).
It is a dynasty of blood. It is a cursed throne. Bilawal Bhutto knows that, he after all, was speaking in the graveyard of martyrs, all from his own family. BB did not inherit this country. Her father was ‘murdered’, she and her mother jailed and persecuted. She was ‘elected’ (helpful to remind oneself from time to time) by the people of Pakistan after a decade-long struggle. What smooth transfer of ‘dynastic’ power? Bilawal is too young and in politics because her mother was martyred. Some price to pay for the throne. Who would choose that for themselves? If we want to end dynasties in Pakistan, or as it seems more particularly this dynasty, we can start by stop killing the Bhuttos.
The speech of Bilawal Bhutto came soon after the circus recently conducted in Lahore and the general atmosphere of fear and confusion; this is fresh air. It was the best, most clear headed speech made in Pakistan in the last five years. This will not solve all the problems that this country faces. The legitimate grievances against the present government remain and have to be repeated. However, his speech does mean that the blood of Bilour, Taseer and BB has not been in vain. We are not completely dead yet. There still remains hope. He has giant shoes to fill and we will know in due course how he fares. Nonetheless, he is off to a very promising start. BB would have been proud. Let me end by quoting again from ZAB’s letter to BB, also something Bilawal Bhutto would hopefully remember. “Your grandfather taught me the politics of pride; your grandmother taught me the politics of poverty. I am beholden to both for the fine synthesis. To you, my darling daughter, I give only one message. It is the message of the morrow, the message of history. Believe only in the people, work only for their emancipation and equality.”

I read a short story where ,some people, for whome their leader was hanged, wanted to get their hands on the rope that was used to hang him , so their houses remain safe from evil aliens . The same thing has happened to bhutoos ,their people don't want freedom but a military slavery and the get it and are likely to get it again
Hi
Well said Saroop Sahib! Dark forces continue to conspire against democratic leaders with impunity and we must pray for the safety of Bilawal.
If that pathetic self pitying speech is a great start - I shudder to think what a bad one would be like
Yes Politicians of the PPP and ANP are always the ones to lose their lives. Well obviously they are the secular parties and seen by the Establishment as a real threat to the ideology of Pakistan. The terrible truth is that without these two Political parties to protect the people Pakistan would have resembled Somalia years ago.
@F:
Lets blame the follies of the mighty generals, martial law administrators and the self proclaimed field marshall on the inexperienced foreign minister. 1965 and 1971 were doings of the army regime, lets not deprive them of their due credits. Neither, Ayub nor Yahya were minors who could have been manipulated so easily. ZAB played a part which by no means was decisive, in fact Mujib dealt with him cordially till the end.
".. If we want to end dynasties in Pakistan, or as it seems more particularly this dynasty, we can start by stop killing the Bhuttos....."
A much wiser way; stop calling and treating Bilawal as Bhutto, which incidentally he is not. Start calling him Zardari, which he actually is by the rules of the game, and see the difference. There will be no need for another Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.
Beautifully put by mr saroop. I completely agree with ur analysis, sir.
A very factual Op Ed by ET at the time when the rightwing hate mongers are hard at work. It is customary in our society to blame the victim and try to put him/her on trial instead of the culprit. I have heard statements against the rape victims "why did she go out, our women don't go out to get raped" and similar stupid logic. The killing of ZAB by the generals and judges, the murders of BB, Taseer, Bhatti, Bilour and many other leaders of ANP/PPP is a proof that these parties do not have the actual power. That is why not a single murderer is punished. When BB came to power twice she knew full well the generals and judges who put her father to death. Justice Nasim Shah made open admission that there was pressure to put ZAB to death. Yet BB never had the powers to prosecute these killers. Who would love ZAB more than BB. These opponents of BB, Bilawal and PPP? I wish one of the writers write on this subject and expose the reason and forces who are ever powerful in Pakistan. That is why not a single man was punished for surrendering half the country, atrocities against Bengali, Bloch and other Pakistanis, killers of 80 years old Bughti, stationing OBL in army base and the list goes on and on. Everybody knows who killed ZAB, who had campaign of disinformation and washed the crime scene after BB's murder, who killed Bughti, who killed Taseer, but the courts are sitting on these cases for years. Wile the useless time consuming Memo case, Swiss letter, sugar and gas rates all executive appointments are more imp for the top judiciary.
Very touching. I have no words to describe Bilawal's courage and decision to enter the dirty mirky world of politics. Dynasty or no dynasty, being the son of BB and grand son of ZAB, he has untold and too powerful enemies in the establishment. Everyone knows that. Inspite of that to come out roaring is real guts. This lad deserves a chance.
An extremely partial myopic view of a mind that fails to look beyond political gimmickery n soeeches........ ppp has produced only words, apart from that the current government that enjoys peoples support, if theycall it that, would have changed atleast some of pakistan....,they have always cried and will always keep crying.......and their apologists will try to cover their complete failures by wriing pieces like this one
I am trying to figure out, after reading this article, if the people murdered their leaders or the leaders let down the people. I will have to say that it is the later. Leaders are made by merit and not by birth. If leaders are made because their parent was a leader then that is where a nation fails. For a minute imagine, if we have all our cricketers chosen because their parents played for Pakistan. Not some but all. We will have no Inzimams, Waqars, Waseems and so on. That is a recipe for loss my friend. Democracy is a process of picking up the best and not the one with best connections.
i have already cried very much .. now again you made me to cry. i were there few days before 27th. all at a time ...shaheed were under one syban /tomb. why they killed one by one before our eyes? we know not what sin they had committed that become necessary for them all to be killed ? -1st Z.A Bhutto than Mirshahnawaz than Murtaza and in last BB. and we do not know what to say about the wife of Shaheed ZAB and mother of three shaheeds- Begam Bhutto?
Another melodramatic article about political martyrdom narrative with little substance. Why cant we question our leaders on their actual performance in power instead of amorphous and shadowy qualities as referred to in this piece? Why must we succumb to the drama of wailing and whining all the time? If Pakistan is to move forward, this approach of victimhood and its unquestioning adulation must cease at once.
Your most beautiful piece of writing so far Saroop. Truly heart wrenching. Garhi Khuda Bakhsh is indeed our highest honor of unwavering resilience and our collective shame.
The definition and standards of great are quite extraordinary in Pakistan. ZAB played the leadership role in the following events that damaged Pakistan internally and externally: - 1965 War. Upon his advice Gen Ayub Khan declared war and lost. - 1970 / 1971: ZAB REFUSED to share power with the legitimate winner of the elections. He sided with the army in the genocide against its own Bengali citizens. Pakistan lost the war and itself. - 1974: as PM he writes a new constitution which enshrines bigotry. No "non-Muslim" could seek high office.
In no other country would this qualify for greatness. Quite the opposite.
It is really frustrating how famous journalists like Hamid Meer, Sohail Warraich and now MR. Saroop are praising MR. Bilawal's venomous speech. By beating the trumpets of their "fearlessness" and "sacrifices"; you people are criminally justifying their bad governance, corruption, negative politics, ineptness and wrong priorities. You are launching an aspersion on Bhagat Singh by elevating Neo-Imperialist Bilawal to the level of a great freedom fighter.
Log bhokay mer gaye likan Bhutto zinda hai
The best ever! Thank you, Mr. Saroop Ijaz.
Looks like the PPP-PML chapter is coming to a close, and the chapter of MQM-PTI-MQI is being opened. The country is going through an epic transformation right before our very own eyes.
Sir with all due respect Bilawal should punish the culprits and murderers. Govt's function is to protect people, not to condemn killings!! Bilour, Bhatti and Taseer were killed during PPP regime. What action our so-called liberal and secular party has taken so far? Only occasional condemnations!!
Death, it seems is a merciless thing. It made people think and see what they haven't for their entire life. Zulfiqar Bhtto wrote this letter to BB, when "he had been in confinement for 12 months and in a death cell for three". Again, Death is a merciless, cruel thing, making people see and feel what they have never seen and felt before.
Khud aap apnay daam main siyad agiya-Bhutto politicised religion and made it a part of constitution.that decides who is good muslim and who is bad. This constitution requires every citizen of this country to do blasphamy to the leaders of other faiths or sects to get certificate of muslim. Why whining for own faults.Indeed it is very sad to see miserable end of these politicle figures but we should honestly admitt that it was PPPP who opened the door for relgious intollerance and hatred in Pakistan.
Excellent analysis, not only of the speech but also of the Pakistan's political history. Logical answer to all the hatred spread by Bhutto & democracy Haters.
This article literally made me cry!!!!
and scared for Bilawal. I dont want him to face this world where there is so much ridiculing!
Things like these make me wanna say Jeay Bhutto with a sunken heart!
