When BB entered active politics, her detractors were far too many. From the powerful establishment to the right-wing media and her ‘uncles’ (older party stalwarts), everyone predicted that she would fail and the PPP would disintegrate. She proved everyone wrong and demonstrated in her 20s her tenacity and capability to resist Pakistan’s most insidious and brutal dictatorship. By the time she returned to Pakistan in 1986, her stature was almost iconic. However, the decade that followed pitted her against a restructured Pakistan where political engineering especially in Punjab made her play the power game to stay relevant as well to guard against the wily games of her adversaries.
Of course, she made mistakes as prime minister and perhaps, as a politician, too. But she never gave up on her core principles of a democratic, federal and enlightened Pakistan. Today, Pakistan’s best social sector service delivery architecture, comprising 100,000 lady health workers, was her brainchild. She launched the anti-Polio campaign and by the end of the 1990s, we had almost eradicated the virus. These are not minor achievements in a country where the people’s welfare has seldom been on the agenda. Her legacy lives on in the shape of Asia’s largest social protection programme — the Benazir Income Support Programme — which provides cash assistance to poorest seven million households in the country.
All political parties including that of Nawaz Sharif, who earlier labelled BB as a ‘security risk’, have espoused Benazir’s vision for a revised security doctrine. The elements of the deep state have not roadblocked the current government to open up trade with India and relax the stringent visa regime. BB reset the policy vision for Pakistan and in the process also reversed her father’s national security doctrines, which still inform the hardliners in the military establishment.
BB did pay a heavy price for her engagement in politics though. For decades she was relentlessly defamed. Her character was attacked and she was even ridiculed to be a mother or expect a child while in office. Later, the favourite stick of the right-wing — corruption — was used against her to tarnish her image as a politician. Add to this, stories of her sell-out to India and the United States while the military managed the foreign policy, the nuclear programme and regional adventurism. He close aide during 1993-96 tenure, Zafar Hilaly, in a series published in The Friday Times (December 5-11, 2008), has recounted how marginalised she was in setting the Afghanistan policy. Despite her flexibility to work with the junta, she was thrown out of power in 1996 and soon found herself in exile thereafter.
The years in exile, 1997-2007, comprised political isolation and opprobrium at home. But her constituents — millions of poor and the dispossessed — knew what it was all about. It was the tale that their lives were made of: the powerful versus the powerless. Her return to Pakistan in 2007 demolished years of propaganda once again when she was received by hundreds of thousands. This was a different BB: not too willing to compromise on the basics so her stance on extremism was bold and determined. The junta did not want her to be present in the country when the elections took place. So, the terrorists gave her a clear message on her return as her procession was bombed and hundreds of innocent PPP workers died in the mayhem. She did not relent and almost marched towards death.
The seasoned BB, marking 30 years of active politics, in 2007 had also ensured a consensus via the Charter of Democracy with Nawaz Sharif. This is perhaps the most formidable of BB’s legacy. Her party’s government is completing the term and the Opposition led by Sharifs has refused to scuttle the process by involving military unlike the 1990s.
Today, Pakistan is a poorer place. It has lost the clearest and most popular voice against extremism. Sadly, the protracted process of bringing her killers to justice only indicates how difficult it is to nab the powerful backers of extremists who reside in the most protected enclaves within the state itself. It will only happen with civilian ascendancy and undoing decades of unaccountable rule by a few unelected institutions.
BB’s sacrifice on December 27, 2007 will live on as a tale of bravery inspiring struggles against extremism and bigotry. And, not giving up despite the odds.

Raza, like always you have the best things to say, however people may have biases interpreting the facts.Haters are gona hate anyways, but that dos not bar us to abstain stating the truth. I wish people would understand the stature of Mohtarma and her sacrifices for democracy. We are not losing hope, we will fight for the right and stand against the wrong.
Jiyay BB
Reading these comments below, one gets the feeling that even our English medium institutions are producing ignorant and politically sterile Taliban nothing less than Madrassah breed! No wonder terrorists like OBL and their clean shaved proxies like IK are their ideals!
Willing your party chairmanship to your son is hardly democracy
@socko:
"Hatred among the punjabi pakistanis against Bhutto family is aptly visible"
Bhutto was made Bhutto because Punjabis overwhelmingly voted for him. Punjabis don't hate real Bhutto, but the corruption, loot, and plunder of later men and women who are just using the name of Bhutto and making fool the simpletons. It is narrow-mindedness of the hateful people who cannot see beyond their noses, but still blame the others for their own fault.
Hatred among the punjabi pakistanis against Bhutto family is aptly visible and increasing day by day... if this hatred keeps on continuing and ppl dont try to empathise with ppl in other provinces, pakistan may be ready to see many more Bangladeshs emerging out... You ppl are taking the path of self destruction. It will not destroy others, it will destroy only punjabis, 'cause other provinces can sustain their economy, but punjab wont be able to due to all the corruption of mindsets in ppl of punjab provinces.
"Mohtarma’s legacy: to never give up"
Never give up what? "Corruption"? Yeah, we already know that.
My initial comments were not included just wanted to say that a balanced Op Ed and a tribute to a born leader who was not afraid to lay her life for democracy and secular Pakistan. The land of pure has become a strange place where the worst dictators and their families thrive without any fear or retribution while the popularly elected leaders and their families are butchered one after the other. Yet the rightwing never attacks the killers but somehow holds the deceased and their families responsible for their own deaths!
Very good Article Raza. And indeed a tribute to Shaheed Rani. However, it is disgusting to read comments. Due to This mentality, we are collecting bodies of our people and we will keep collecting until someone of them killed by that evil. Then they will understand that for what BB killed for. Mark my words, Those utter cowards who cannot even say a word due to fear of death, can never protect them either.
I am always astounded as to why she sleep walked to her assassination. Which is after, as you have rightly mentioned, she had been sufficiently warned.
Why did she have such feeble security around her? The state was lethargic to protect her (again, the 'either incompetent or collaborator' tag is apt), a fact which would have been re-inforced by the deadly warning. I have wondered why her party then did not arrange for her security on its own.
I'm not very conversant with Pakistan, but I suppose a professional private militia would not have been difficult for her party to summon.
As I said, am confused.
I agree with the writer. BB had many choices, rather coming back and facing a ruthless dictator like Zia, after him his "left-over" right wing fanatics and military establishment. She faced all eye to eye. Unprecedented as her name was.
BB's come back in 1986 was more like her father coming to power in 1971, both faced a changed Pakistan, a challenging adverse environment to rule. But one thing which was very different, that after Zia, conditions for women in public life & politics were impossible. In Pakistani politics and society where politics require nerves of steel, she would always remain a role model for women in general and working women in special.
One other thing which is very less discussed about her in Pakistan, is Benazir as a writer, scholar and speaker. She always had a succinct analysis and speeches according to target audience. Irrespective of her busy schedule she published some good writings. I can never forget her speech in an American university before her arrival in Pakistan in 2007. She presented a plan to eradicate extremism from Pakistan and how economic recovery is related to that.
Her murder is an evidence that she proved to her enemies also, she had never give up, and she would never give up.
The dead can't lead, unfortunately. Please leave some roses on her grave and then vote for PTI, the party of change. I am sure BB's soul will be pleased with you. Amen
Indeed the Truth! but this Nation isn't ready and mature to Accept the Liberal thinking ever. Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for People, because their was no other leader with enough guts to stand against Military Might. She showed the world that sincere, Bold and committed Leadership is the only way this country could be strengthened. Salute to Shaheed Banazir. Jiye Bhutto. i tweet @Lakhanys. feel free to reply!
Excellent piece sir. Proud of the fact SMBB is my leader, she's the leader of the masses who still cry for her. Her great sacrifice is an ahsaan over me, and I'm not ahsaan faramosh like many other ppl are. To all the haters, u can only hate, but u can't match an ounce of bravery she had .
I am deeply disappointed by this piece. There is no doubt that BB was a bright politician, but to paint her as a beacon of democracy and enlightenment is criminal. She was given the leadership of the party as inheritance from her (even brighter) father. The legacy carries on, so much for her democratic nature. She, her party and her family nurtured and encouraged feudal politics and nepotism in the country, and continue doing so.
Her stance against extremism was perhaps her biggest achievement - for which she needs to be commended. Apart from that, she remains a dynastic leader who was brought up to be one from day one.
Well done sir!! Absolutely amazing piece. Proud of the fact that SMBB is my leader. Proud of the fact she is the leader of the masses of people who still cry for her. I can never forget her great sacrifice. That is an ahsaan of her and SZAB over me. And I'm not ahsaan faramosh like many ppl. For all the haters, u can only criticize, but can't match an ounce of bravery she had or her family has.
Excellent piece Raza Rumi. I read some posts and shocked how some of my friends underestimated dynamic & iconic Benazir Bhutto & its party PPP in Pakistani politics. Before criticizing Shaheed Benazir Bhutto we should take a look in what circumstances she started her career and the way she was being pushed to live in exile in late 90's & so. Comments which I read above after this article is merely based on hatred and scaling facts after her death. Before putting garbage on PPP I would like to ask few questions which party has questioned and came infront of dictators before PPP? Who had thrown Ayub Khan from power? who took charge of power when we'd 90K war prisoners in Indian custody? Who initiated Atomic program in Pakistan?. Who called Islamic Summit in Lahore in 74? Which political party activist were beaten infront of general public by Gen Zia for their love with Bhutto & democracy? Though ZAB and BB did some big mistakes in their tenures however their connection with people of Pakistan remained were deep and always stressed on Pakistani nationalism. Benazir who was morally bashed by PMLN in 80's & 90's she forget everything and shaked hand with Nawaz Sharif under the umbrella of Charter of Democracy. A party who has lost more human lives from top leadership to its workers how they can be categorized as "Traitors"? A party who is not stick to Lahore & Karachi but has strongholdes in all parts of Karachi. A party who never discriminated and not based on Shia, Sunni, Punjabi, Pushton, Sindhi and Baloch nationalism but always flagged up Pakistani nationalism at every platform even losing their top leaders like Bhutto & Benazir. A party who never used Islam as a tool to gain power but always supported progressive forces of society. I agreed current spell of PPP one of its worst spell interms of law & order situation, inflation, energy crisis and terrorism however it has nothing to do with its core principal and values as a party. If you really wanted to know what is politics, democracy, loyalty you should really visit to shrine of Bhuttos in Garhi Khuda Baksh.
One sentence in the article aptly sums up Benazir's biggest achievement, which history will stand witness to... "Her party’s government is completing the term and the Opposition led by Sharifs has refused to scuttle the process by involving military unlike the 1990s." Democracy, while still in its embryonic stages, is a gift the brave woman has left us to cater for.
atleast emotionally they are successful unlike other failed ones
An excellent and insightful piece. A girl who lost her father to a dictator spent her life fighting for democracy in Pakistan and sacrificed her life for the same. It takes a lot of courage to lead the masses in the face of overwhelming odds. Pakistan will miss her for the decades to come.
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto struggled all her life for Pakistan. She sacrificed her life against extremism. She spent her youth in exile. Her struggle will always be remembered. Welcome Bilawal Bhutto .. Jiyaaay bhutto :) more than 300,000 people in garhi khuda bakhsh from all walks of life , from all over Pakistan recognize ppp's struggle.
Benazir lives on, those oblivious to your legacy will recognize it soon just they did Bhutto's.
Her death was painful, but her legacy is corruption, cunning, political manipulation and revenge. She never was what she is made to look like.
@Raza Romi: I didn't except this nonsense from you mate! Everyone knows that she signed the famous NRO before coming to Pakistan and was here for power, not for the people. The people are emotional fools who will still go to her grave today because they haven't had proper leadership in this country and all they have seen is military dictators for decades. Zardari and his cronies have made Pakistan much worse then what it was 5 years ago.
Well done, Raza. Benazir Bhutto regardless of her faults (thanks to the system) probably is one of the best political leaders in Pakistan.
An excellent piece of writing, Raza.
The indoctrinated detractors do not really know why they hate PPP or Bhutto as a whole. Generations who were fed on either ignorance or a curriculum designed by right-wing and approved by military establishment will do nothing but cause more fissures in the society. The detractors must well be aware that the PPP voters are not going anywhere, that they're in millions. The establishment wants to make gains on this conflict in the society. But one can safely predict that such a conflict can eventually prove to be disastrous.
No Benazir Bhutto on political horizon means a Pakistan which is ever more divided, politically estranged and awry. That she was the symbol of federation and uniting factor must never be overlooked. We are today left with politicians who can either survive on GHQ's blessings or their respective constituencies' voters. In other words, regional politics deepening. This is omen of what the elders had predicted decades ago: Division.
If she was a good politician or not, that can be debateable. But one cannot deny the fact that her party is the only party whose leaders have been jailed, tortured and killed. For a moment lets just forget the differences and at least aknowledge the fact that her family has suffered the most in Pakistani politics. I'd really appreciate if we stop blame game and start respecting the deceased at least. Thank you!
The situation Pakistan is facing today tells us the reality that how much Pakistan is missing a true leader like Benazir Bhutto. It wasn't a murder of a politician but a murder of an ideology... and since that we have lost our path. Pakistan would have been a different country if she was there
She died for power not for people .. she made a deal with musharraf and signed NRO ... we are still reaping what she sowed .. be realistic
I don't think she was able to achieve anything great for the people of Pakistan or Pakistan itself, people are emotionally attached to PPP due to the legacy of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto not due to their performance. Mr Raza, I'm still searching something BB did for Pakistan in your article but sorry to say I didn't find anything. BISP is one of the worst programmes that PPP has started, instead of providing the poor with good education, free helath care, technical education, easy loans, they are giving Rs 1000 a month! which is far from enough & PPP is making our poor stay as beggar's. Mr Raza please enlighten all of us Pakistanis as to how this Government has given us a better life in these 5 years of PPP Govt? and please don't say that they have given up their lives & chants about democracy, all that matters is the welfare of Pakistanis irrespective of the form of government & we Pakistanis are giving up life everyday for this country, so at the end of the day its the common man who does not run away from Pakistan & is giving more to this country than any leader has done or is doing.
