Delhi couldn’t allow itself to forget an initiative that had taken so long to simmer. That is, use the constituency of the people of India and Pakistan who, despite the intervening decades, still have an abiding affection for each other to prise open the hard-edged attitudes of their establishments. Krishna was sent in September with the full knowledge that he was so gaffe-prone that it may just detract attention from the superb wig carefully crafted to suit his head.
So, Krishna signed the visa agreement that promised to overhaul a 1974 regime and instead open the iron curtain somewhat, allowing group tours and visa-on-arrival at Wagah/Attari for those 65 years of age and above. But Malik insisted he come to Delhi, a minor satrap visiting the capital of the old empire. He got his chance — and he blew it. Everywhere Malik went in Delhi, he embarrassed his hosts, first comparing the Mumbai attacks with the demolition of the Babri Masjid (implying that this, too, shall pass), dismissing the torture and mutilation injuries on the body of Kargil war hero Saurabh Kalia as those having been caused by inclement weather (they weren’t), and much more. To his credit, he admitted that al Qaeda leader Ilyas Kashmiri, who later became a star of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, was a retired general of the Pakistan Army (this even surprised the Pakistani press). Moreover, in what was one of his more forward-looking moments, he suggested that India and Pakistan share intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks. Almost as an aside, he re-signed the visa agreement and Delhi heaved a sigh of relief.
And now for Gujarat. What does one do to a wildly popular chief minister who refuses to apologise for the killings and torture of a thousand of his own state subjects? Narendra Modi has become the chief minister of Gujarat for the third time but refused to field even one Muslim candidate in the elections. Asking Gujarat’s Muslims if they remember the 2002 pogrom or if they’ve moved on from that memory and hope to rebuild their lives anew can only be adding insult to injury.
Gujarat’s mercantilism has always used religion as a metaphor, both to unite and to divide. Modi may want to move on from Gujarat to the centre and want his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to put him up as its prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 elections. But for the time being, the BJP is not biting as its leaders realise that India is too diverse to fall into the Modi trap and that Modi is not Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2002. The week has, thankfully, passed. The future, despite the supposed joy of the festive season ahead, looks quite grim.

@Jyoti Malhotra: M’am, truth doesn’t need to be nice
Now we know why Modi apologists go berserk each time Gujarat 2002 riot is mentioned.
@Gary:
That statement is wrong. The BJP does field Muslim candidates. They actually won a lot of Muslim majority districts.
@Rakib: "He will be good for Pakistan in a way perverse that he may not intend. As PM, even if there is a teeny-weeny doubt in any body’s mind regarding the then necessity of Partition, Modi will help remove it."
Well first of all there is no doubt in any Pakistani's mind that partition was a good thing. I do not believe that Modi's coming will make an iota of a difference there. Secondly, even if he never becomes PM, the outrage industry in Pakistan will continue to talk about the Guajrat riots even though most Muslims in Gujrata have moved on. The reason is continuous grievances against Hindu India keep the Pakistani army leadership in their Series 7 BMWs. Thirdly India should choose its PM based on what is best for India without worrying about how people in Pakistan will react. Finally, even in India the people who want India and Pakistan to reunite is really small and shrinking fast.
it is a matter of regret that ms Malhotra is no different from those who live in the cocoon called Delhi. Barely four decades ago a conscientious District Magistrate would have rounded up goonda elements and bound them over for good behaviour with hardly any political interference. Most DMs would have done that. We have broken the system thanks to Mrs Gandhi. If the civil service has been emasculated, the judiciary has become weak and at the lower and middle levels pleases lawyers and lets off known criminals. The politicians have become all powerful with the support of media which is easily bought. Mrs Gandhi's amorality was the beginning with the great fertilizer scandal. Rajiv followed her footsteps and we had the Sikh massacre in Delhi and the unnecessary sacrifice of Indian soldiers in Sri Lanka in an attempt to assist in the genocide there. He was responsible for Bofors (and Tatra) and the murder of Olaf Palme. At least Narendra Modi is not seen as corrupt like the "Secular" pols in Delhi and elsewhere. whether Narendra Modi was responsible for the deaths in Gujarat is still a moot question. I do think that there was a failure in Administration there which is a different matter. Further those Delhi journalists and public "intellectuals" seem to think that the value of a human life varies according to religion or caste. That is nonsense and they know it.. Incidentally I was in public service and as DM and in the Secretariat dealt with difficult situations esp with the minorities. And till the end was trusted by them. All one had to do was to be fair and correct. Alas, times seemed to have changed
@Jyoti Malhotra: I'm happy to hear? How about listening instead of hearing? This probably explains why there is so much disconnect between media and the rest.
@Rommel: "We in pakistan, want Modi the prime minister of India but I am sure Indians won’t let him."
Pakistanis may get your wish but you will regret it. This guy is hardcore. He is no pushover like MounMohan Singh.
So when did it become statutory that Modi must field Muslim candidates? I thought we created Pakistan for the express purpose. The fact that Modi's candidates won in every Muslim majority area should say something about Modi's administration and his strategy. Before Jyoti Malhotra and her ilk indict Modi, they should perhaps push for the punishment of the Gandhi family and their Congress goons for the massacre of 4000 Sikhs in 1984. Some of those goons sit in today's federal cabinet. They should also chase down the leaders of the Muslim mobs who burned alive a train load of Hindu women because they believed in propaganda from across the border that Hindus will never fight back. Jyoti Malhotra and her friends on the left think the rest of the country lives and ostrich's life and suffer amnesia. . I am not sure if Modi will ever be able to shine outside Gujarat. However if he ever runs, I would vote for him like millions of other Indians.
@Author, @Gujjarputra: I am happy to hear all views, but can we avoid the bad language please? What about you ma'am? You wrote: What does one do to a wildly popular chief minister....... Aren't you implying that you are the sole custodian of entire wisdom of the world and the people who voted for Modi are stupids? Don't you sound elitist?
Yellow jounalism. No substance, but full of lies. The author is accusing modi for post godhra as if she had all the evidences and proof for his involment. Google should remove this article for sparm and trolling from it's database. Unecessary trolls roaming in cyberspace like Jyoti.
Since the last 10 years there are countless rapes and murders, under congress rule and external minister talks about humanity, what about their justice and each and every congress spokes person talks about 2002 godhra riots. If US not interested in keeping relations with modi and gujarat then US should not keep relations with India too. As i said countless rapes and murders of innocents where is your "crime against humanity". Give justice to those who are waiting for justice.
Modi may be a hero in Gujarat, and for his short sighted admirers. But india is not Gujarat alone and he + his gangs will have to be content with what they have already got.

@Rakib even if there is a teeny-weeny doubt in any body’s mind regarding the then necessity of Partition
After 65 years, are you still obsessed with Partition. Pakistan is a reality now, deal with it and move on
@Jyoti Bad language? That is just a constructive criticism for people like you who have been stuck in 2002 even though there have been many incidents like that as happened. When riots happened in Assam where were people like you. You always keep bringing that up to gain cheap popularity. Shame on you.
@Gujjarputra: I am happy to hear all views, but can we avoid the bad language please?
@Rommel:
*We in pakistan, want Modi the prime minister of India ....."
Brilliant comment. He will be good for Pakistan in a way perverse that he may not intend. As PM, even if there is a teeny-weeny doubt in any body's mind regarding the then necessity of Partition, Modi will help remove it. The worst divisive force in India will also prove to be the best unifying force for Pakistanis!! However, as you said already: ".but I am sure Indians won’t let him...."
Visa is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs and not Home Ministry
@Jyoti – In case of Modi, somewhere you have to stop for your divisive journalism to gain cheap popularity and questioning elected representative on communal lines. The ticket distribution by any party is made on the sole criteria of win ability of its candidates. Have you ever questioned National Conference, PDP or so called Hurriat Pasand for not including minorities in selecting their candidates?
As per my view if Hinduim can be put in one sentence it is this "You will reap as you sow". Remember the story of Vidhura in Mahabharat or the phrase "last life's sin". 2002 riots is a millstone that Modi cannot shake off in this life.
"Narendra Modi has become the chief minister of Gujarat for the third time but refused to field even one Muslim candidate in the elections." I agree, this is not a good development. This is against the inclusive, secular, pluralistic, and open society many of us wish to see. Irresponsible media and irresponsible policies are equally to blame for the situation we are in today. Divisive policies based on caste, region, sex, religion seldom leads to inclusive society. Instead of promoting inclusiveness, media has spent so much time and energy demonizing Modi. If we had asked ourselves what can be done to prevent situations like 1984, and brought those responsible to justice, Gujarat might not have happened.
Malik was "a minor satrap visiting the capital of the old empire"??? What in the world does that mean? Not to put too fine a point on it, but too many in Pakistan claim that empire, if anyone's, was theirs, so lets drop references to the medieval.
First off, Malik is not a wildly popular fascist who represents a thoroughly illiberal and worrying trend in his country's pluralist politics, so the comparison with Modi is fundamentally misplaced. Second, the author would not have been ill-advised to put Malik's comments in perspective as those of a loose cannon with an eye to a domestic constituency. She just took it and ran with it. Ugh!
Malhotra you are stupid. You people are still walking on communal line and spreading this venom. Please use your pen for constructive critics.

The reaction of the Majority was to the Muslim Hordes burning over Fifty Hindu Yatris in the Rail Passenger Coaches in Godhra. While I condemn the "Excessive Response" I would request all "Writers - Commentators" of the Ms Jyoti Malhotra Ilk to not only "Highlight" the "Excessive Response" which is the EFFECT but also the "Burning of the over Fifty Hindu Yatris" at Godhra is the CAUSE. . Remove the Cause and the Effect will automatically be removed!

OhHH. why should he apologize ? what is the legal case against him ? he stopped the riots in two days with around 1100+(850M+300H) people dead compare that to 5000+ died in 1969 Gujarat violence or to 1984 Sikh pogrom , if those people were not guilty how can be modi ? why should modi take MORAL responsibility when HE NEVER JUSTIFIED ANYTHING ? I'M just SICK and TIRED of these bogus and biased articles ! *
India needs a strong leader like Modi at the center.
