PESHAWAR:

A hand grenade and a mortar shell were found near the boundary wall of Bacha Khan International Airport on Wednesday.

Security officials managed to discover the grenade and defused it.  Security forces said that the ammunition was probably left behind by the terrorists who had attacked the airport on Saturday, and it was only just discovered.

“We have taken the grenade and artillery shell into our possession,” said an official, adding “it was defused inside the airport by our own bomb disposal squad.” The official added that some ammunition was also found inside the bushes.

On December 15, 10 militants attacked the airport which is also a PAF base. By Sunday all the suspected attackers had been killed. Five died when they rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into one of the outer walls of the airport, three were killed in cross-fire with security forces, while the remaining two detonated the suicide vests they were wearing.

Flights at the Bacha Khan Airport were resumed after 17 hours on Sunday. Security measures have been heightened in the city following the assault.
