A friend of Farooqi was also injured in the firing incident.
President of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat Karachi, Maulana Aurengzeb, condemned Farooqi's killing. He blamed the government for not providing security to the religious leader despite repeated reminders.
Maulana Aurengzeb said his party will stage a protest outside the Chief Minister House against Farooqi's murder after the funeral.
Farooqi had previously escaped two attempts on his life. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
