KARACHI: A 39-hour-long sit-in by the distraught Shia community ended on Sunday upon the intervention of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad.

The Shia Ulema Council announced ending the protest after successful negotiations with the Sindh governor, who assured the community leaders of his cooperation.

A number of people had gathered at Numaish on MA Jinnah Road Friday noon for the protest called by the SUC against the ongoing targeted murders of community’s leaders, workers and sympathisers. Various other Shia organisations including Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen and Shia Action Committee also joined the protest. Meanwhile, a delegation comprising community elders called on Ebad at the Governor House and expressed their concern over the current situation.

The sit-in was called off after the governor assured them the government would step up to curb the targeted killings of Shias and bring criminals to justice, according to SUC Sindh chief Maulana Nazir Abbas Taqvi. He warned, however, that the organisations would again organise similar protests if their demands are not met.
