Over Rs277m approved for Clifton sewage pumping station

The station was damaged during a bomb attack at Civil Lines in 2010.

KARACHI: Almost two years after an attack on a nearby police station damaged the Clifton Sewerage Pumping Station, the Sindh government on Thursday approved Rs277 million and the PC-I for its renovation.

The station used to deal with nearly 25 million gallons of sewage from Bath Island, Clifton, Civil Lines, Old City Area, II Chundrigar Road, Saddar and adjoining areas on a daily basis. After the project is completed, the pumping station will be able to treat 40 million gallons of sewage everyday.

The pumping station was damaged when the Crime Investigation Department’s office in Civil Lines was struck by a massive bomb blast, which was preceded by firing and a grenade attack. Around 17 people had died during the attack, and over 100 were injured.



The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) had made temporary arrangements to treat sewage from the areas, but it was finding it hard to dispose it of. The cash-starved water utility was unable to renovate the pumping station on its own.

The funds were allocated by the provincial government after KWSB managing director Misbahuddin Farid had requested Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan to help the board repair the station.

Farid has appointed chief engineer Hasan Eijaz Kazmi as project director, Hashim Abbass as project manager and directed them to complete the tender process so that the renovation can start within a month.
