By-election for Senate seat on Sept 23

ISLAMABAD: The by- election for a Senate seat in Sindh that fell vacant following the death of Senator Abdul Razzaq Thaheem will be held on September 23. Thaheem, a retired judge, was serving as federal minister for local governments until his death on September 1.

According to the schedule issued by the Election Commission, nomination papers will be sought from candidates on September 8. Intending candidates can file nomination papers on September 14 and 15. And scrutiny of their papers will be held the next day.

The candidates will be able to file appeals against rejection of their nominations on September 17, while the fate of such appeals will be decided the next day.

September 19 has been fixed as the late date for candidates to withdraw their candidature. The final list of contesting candidates will be published on September 20.

Balloting will be held from 9am to 4pm on September 23 at the Sindh Assembly building.  Elections for Senate seats have been largely uncontested since the 2008 general elections due to mutual understanding between mainstream political parties about not fielding candidates against each other.
