KARACHI: Six suspects have been taken into custody to investigate the attack on a Rangers checkpost near Al Asif Square on Monday.

Two paramilitary soldiers and a traffic policeman died while another traffic inspector and a passerby were injured when at least two armed men on a motorcycle fired at a picket set up on the entrance to Abul Hassan Isphani Road.

In an overnight search operation in Sohrab Goth, including Machar Colony, Ganna market and Indus Complex, the Rangers arrested about half a dozen suspects belonging to tribal areas.

The men were shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Investigators suspect the involvement of banned militant outfits in the attack. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or other banned outfits may be involved but anyone can take advantage of the ongoing security situation, said a Rangers official.

The victims

The bodies of the slain Rangers were sent to their hometowns for burial after their funeral prayers were offered at Malir Halt.

Qamar Ahmed

Hakim Ali hailed from Tharparkar and joined the paramilitary force 23 years ago. He was the father of three sons and a daughter.

Inayat Ali belonged to Umerkot and joined Rangers around seven years ago. He was the father of eight children.

Nobody has come up to register the case yet. It is likely that the case would be registered on behalf of the Rangers as apparently the actual targets were the law enforcers and not the traffic policemen, said DSP Qamar Ahmed.

The condition of the other traffic inspector was also termed critical. He is under treatment at PNS Shifa.
