Big ‘expectations’ with JPMC’s $4.5m ward
A new obstetrics and gynaecology ward worth $4.5 million was opened at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) on Tuesday.
Funded by the US, this facility will have an outpatients department, ultrasound facility, a small laboratory and minor procedure rooms on the ground floor. It will also have 60 beds for inpatients on the second floor, a 10-bed high dependency unit and a fistula ward, a seminar hall, a library, a workshops hall and a skills laboratory.
US Ambassador Richard Olson inaugurated the new facility. “The United States is working with Pakistan to improve the lives of average Pakistanis through initiatives in the energy, economic, education and other sectors,’’ he said during the ceremony. “We are also actively supporting the health sector and are committed to improving access to quality health care, particularly for young mothers and children under five years.’’
Sindh Minister for Health Dr Sagheer Ahmed thanked the USAID for donating $4.5 million. JPMC is the biggest hospital where more than 100,000 obstetrics and gynaecology patients come in the OPD. There are over 16,000 deliveries are performed in a year. The minister said that the hospital not only caters to patients in Karachi, but also that of rural Sindh and other provinces.
