ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Friday appointed Jam Muhammad Yusuf as Federal Minister for Privatisation on the recommendation of PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.  A formal notification will be issued on Monday.

Jam Muhammad Yusuf, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) who was accused in the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti and is currently on an interim bail, is expected to take the oath as minister on Monday following the formal announcement.

Sources confirm that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi had earlier informed the prime minister of the party’s decision.

The decision came after a meeting held between the key leaders of PML-Q – one of the coalition partners of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led government.

The position has been vacant since the premier removed the former federal minister for privatisation Ghous Bukhsh Khan Mahar from his office last month.

The former minister allegedly had differences with the PPP and the Muttahida Quami Movement. Mahar was repeatedly advised by the party leadership to avoid differences with the ruling party. Despite the reconciliation efforts made by PML-Q Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed the rift between the party and Mahar could not be healed.

Mir Jam Mohammad Yusuf has served as the chief minister of Balochistan during 2002-2007. Yusuf has also previously served as federal minister for water and power‚ railways and senior minister of Balochistan.
