PESHAWAR: The Pakistani Taliban has set up a page on Facebook to recruit enthusiasts to write for a quarterly magazine and to edit video, a spokesman confirmed Friday.

The Umar Media TTP page, which has more than 270 likes, appears to have been created in September and has just a handful of messages written in English.

“Umar Media is proud to announce online jobs oppertunities (sic),” says the first post on the networking website, written on October 25.

“Job discription (sic) is video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data,” it says, giving an email address and asking readers to “plz spread it. This fb account ma be deleted.”

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan confirmed to AFP by telephone on Friday that the faction was “temporarily” using the page “to fulfil its requirements” before launching its own website.

US-based organisation SITE Intelligence Group says the TTP uses Facebook as “a recruitment centre”.

“Through its official media arm, Umar Media, the TTP has taken to Facebook to recruit contributors for their media work and the group’s forthcoming publication ‘Ayah-E-Khilafat’ (Sign of the Caliphate),” it said in a statement.

The TTP Facebook page describes the publication as its “official quarterly magazine” and asks writers to submit articles “on (a) topic of your choice”, or on jihadi current affairs, history, Islamic movements or the plight of Muslims.

Last month, the TTP claimed responsibility for planting a bomb under the car of a prominent Pakistani journalist and TV anchorman, Hamid Mir.

Mir had been criticised by the Taliban after the faction claimed responsibility for shooting teenage activist Malala Yousafzai in October.

Few days ago , in an article in this newspaper , the writer had questioned “Who supplies chemicals to syria ?” . Now the writer should also blame USA for developing FB.

Agree with Nabeel. This is just giving them free promotion on your platform. You should treat stories about Pakistan from wire agencies with a grain of salt and make editorial decisions instead of blindly publishing them.

Nobody should be barred from using technology. I think it’s a positive move of the TTP towards “relatively civilized” approach. Keep it up, brothers.

It is pathetic to see these terrorists use the social media as a platform to promote their evil agenda. The people of the region know better. They have experienced Taliban’s brutality one way or the other. There are always a few naïve individuals who believe that the Taliban can be the torch bearers for their religious believes. Our message to them is look at Taliban’s history and you will see that most of their actions are contrary to religious beliefs of a common person in the region. It is time for the civilian populace to ignore their online presence and support the efforts of security forces to rid the threat of the Taliban. The people of the region have suffered enough at the hands of the terrorists, and it is now time to make them irrelevant not only in the holes that they are operating from, but on the online space as well.

Bunch of hypocrite. Can someone remind them that facebook, youtube, cellphone, CD, DVD, car, computers, Cell phone towers, tweet, LinkedIn are invented by Kafir and there is no mention of these in Quran majid or Hadith or any Sharia Law supporting then ? Either you are with Kafir or against them. If against them than give up these things immediately.

Dude how many bombs have the Bajrang dal or Shiv Sena guys blown up in the last 10 years ? No one is denying that these organizations are right wing and should be marginalized and condemned but you dont see them with AK47’s going around killing people, beheading soldiers and killing girls who want to go to school. Please take your head out of the sand. Stop making senseless comparisons just to make yourself feel better.

Use your logical side of brain my friend. Use all permutations and combinations and it will come to you. You are a smart person. Average person uses only 10% of the brain and most of the time use the emotional side of the brain. Emotional side hijacks the logical side of the brain. Whats the rush it will come to you. I donot want to spoil your ha ha moment.

I am getting that they want to limit the social impact , because the media have failed to impress and social media is just unveiling their topi dramaz openly …

Face bood is 90 Billion Dollar company. Every time any one open Facebook He/She add .0022 $ to Facebook company account. FB not sells any thing but they only sell place for advertisement. As much viewers increase as much as advertisement.
I feel Talaban as completely promoting FB by doing that and nothing. Clever trick to make brand famous. If you want to sell some product put Talaban name on it and than forget to spend money for advertisement.
