Pak-Afghan highway: Torkham border sealed for security purposes

The official says that the security situation on the Afghan Highway had been tightened by paramilitary troops.

Following information that suspected suicide bombers were trying to infiltrate Afghanistan, the Torkham border was sealed on Thursday.


Khyber Agency Political Administration official Meraj Khan said that they were informed by security forces and law enforcement agencies that two suspected bombers were trying to infiltrate Afghanistan via Torkham, after which they sealed the border at 5:15pm.

The official said that the security situation on the Afghan Highway had been tightened by paramilitary troops while the administration had been directed to increase patrolling and security at checkpoints on the highway. Twenty suspects were held and released after investigations.

Before 7pm the border was opened for pedestrians but closed at 7pm until it will reopen the next day.

High-intensity bomb defused

A high-intensity remote-controlled bomb planted in the Sheikhmal Khel area of Landikotal was defused by officials of the bomb disposal squad (BDS) on Thursday.

Khasadar official Amjad said that forces patrolling the Pak-Afghan Highway in the  morning spotted the improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the roadside. They called the BDS who detonated the bomb. Four mortar shells had been attached to the bomb. BDS officials first defused the detonators and then the shells in a deserted area nearby.

On November 30, five paramilitary personnel were injured when a roadside bomb planted in the same area went off. Minutes after the first explosion another IED exploded,  however, no casualties were reported.
