To reach the tournament decider they will have to beat the Netherlands in Saturday’s semi-final after the Dutch accounted for New Zealand 2-0.
Pakistan’s win was due largely to Shakeel Abbasi, who dominated and scored both of his team’s goals.
Abbasi said he believed his team could continue to do well in the tournament.
“In the last three matches I didn’t score and I am a mentor for my side so I realised I had to score,” he said.
“If we have confidence and play hard and have dedication, we have the potential to win against every team.”
Pakistan’s victory was made even sweeter given they were forced to come back after Germany opened the scoring through skipper Moritz Fuerste.
But Pakistan played well throughout the first half and were unlucky not to draw level after many scoring chances.
The trend continued after half-time with Pakistan generating penalty corner attempts and generally dominating.
Pakistan’s second and decisive goal was full of controversy.
The goal was scored by Abbasi, however Germany referred the decision claiming it should not have been awarded as the ball initially came off the back of the stick of a Pakistani player before making its way to Abbasi.
The video proved inconclusive with the goal standing despite the German protests.
The Germans, sensing the danger of missing the semi-finals, went for all-out attack, however Pakistan held on for a memorable win.
The Netherlands were pleased to progress to the last four, yet coach Paul van Ass said he didn’t feel his team played their best.
“It wasn’t the best game from us here. It wasn’t a fun game to watch, but maybe this weekend we will see a lot of nice matches,” he said.
“The test will come this weekend when we play against high pressure. That is what we are here for so I’m looking forward to that.”
Early on it looked as though it would be an easy win with the Dutch on top.
After scoring first through Jeroen Hertzberger, Netherlands struggled to find a way to extend their lead.
A second breakthrough came following a brilliant run into the circle by Sander de Wijn, with Billy Bakker converting for a two-goal cushion and passage into the semi-finals.
India take on Belgium and hosts Australia have an evening quarter-final against England later Thursday.

I love the pose of Abbasi! He is so cute in it. Abbasi,Strong man the Heracles of Pak in armageddon of terrorism ridden nation. Because they won and send the massage across globe we are also sport loving, although terrorism is equal to pak in world media, Where is no happiness but He spread the smile in all over the Pakistan. Pakistan proud on this 11 man army winning against Germans!!
Four out of five dentists surveyed recommended playing hockey.
Give blood. Play hockey.
But those can not play hockey, To play the game is good, To win is better, But to love the game is best of all.
Love for Pakistani Guys from Germany. They played well
I live in Australi oh my God people are crazy for hockey here. Unfortunately Hockey is game for white man here. Basketball is a sport for black men. Hockey is mostly rich man game played by there.
Hockey has given me everything, most importantly it brought me to Swift Current, where I met my wife Kate Blanchfield. She is big fan of Hockey. She saw me first time in action at Hockey Ground in England.
Long live Hockey in Pakistan!!
Hockey is a tough game. People thinks in USA!!
Hockey is the original extreme sport.I was thrilled one year when I was younger when not only did my brothers get hockey sticks for EID or Birthday - but I did too! trust me I think the thing you always got to keep in mind, you know, hockey is a game of one-on-one battles. there is no game like hockey on Earth. Please make hockey the top sports than to boring cricket.
A win against the Olympic champs is worth celebrating despite the weaknesses of the tournament format. This 8 team quarter-final format will probably not be repeated again. What's the point of all 8 teams playing the QF?
Better to split in 2 groups and make each team play the other in its group twice (each team plays 6 matches) and the top 2 in each group progress to the Semis. Another option is or play an 8 team round-robin and the top 4 teams make the semis.
God i love these dark horses. You never know when they will surprise you.
Awesooome. Good things happens when you have resolve and work hard!!!
@salaar:
"----- Inshallah ?"
Great news. I have a feeling Inshallah Pakistan will beat the Dutch.
Looking for Pakistan India Final :)
Terrific feeling! I was so happy FIH adopted the knockout format giving all teams an equal chance at qualifying for the semis. We always play well in the playoff format when the stakes are high.. I am in UK and there is a 12hr difference and I'll be sitting up late watching the semis. The Dutch are a bit of chokers lately, having topped their Olympic group they chocked in the final. In any case, it'll be a low scoring affair. Also I'm glad we don't have Australia in the semis who are really good at exposing gaping holes in our defense. Also very happy for India and who knows we might have a Pak vs India final.
News to gladden the heart. May it get even better.
The most pleasing part was watching the same confidence and commitment which used to be hallmark of our hockey two decades back. Awesome feeling
@spyder.... its headline news because we have reached the semis after over 15 years maybe. if you checked the sports news, you could have followed the tournaments and pakistans progress. we won 1 match and lost 2, prior to this one. As for the hockey team.... wayyyyyy to go! i cant say we'll make it to the finals, but a good showing would go a long way!
@spyder: ET should not have published your senseless comment. In a tournament of 8 teams every team is guaranteed a quarter final place. The only benefit of doing well in group stage is to ensure a weaker opponent in Quarterfinal. By beating Germany (a much superior and strong team), Pakistan has qualified for Semifinal. By the way we lost to Australia by a solitary controversial goal whereas we have been loosing against them by half a dozen goals. We also beat Belgium who has beaten us many times.
So lets praise our team and pray for their further success, which realistically speaking is a long shot.
Congrats Pakistan @Spyder There were 4 teams in two pools, each team played 3 matches which decides the ranking in the pool. Then each team progressed to the QF.
India also reaches semis beating Belgium 1-0 !
Good luck team Pakistan
Congratulations Pakistan!
On ET Reporting: you forgot to mention who Netherlands won against?! Lol i love this paper!
Inconsistency is the trade mark of pak hockey team. they perform well in patches. be ready for thrashing by Holland.
All the best for Semis. Netherlands ll be another tough one.
good show
Well Done GREEN SHIRTS............ :)
Great, Keep it up Green Shirts
Come on GREENS !!!!

All the best for the Semi-Finals, INSHALLAH
Way to go !!! This team are playing like a team this time.
how can pakistan make the semis after this one win? either they've won more and non patriotic ET doesnt think its worthy news to report ..or hockey is a joke
