Restore RMC principal or face a new wave of strikes: YDA

RAWALPINDI:

Another doctors’ strike is in the offing for Rawalpindi, this time because of the removal of Rawalpindi Medical College’s principal over a rat-biting-baby incident at the Holy Family Hospital (HFH).

Young Doctors Association (YDA) Rawalpindi on Tuesday gave the government 24 hours in which to reinstate Dr Musaddiq Khan. Otherwise, representatives of the association said, they will go on an “indefinite” strike.

Dr Khan was removed by the Punjab health secretary after a rat bit a newborn at a labour room of the HFH on November 25.

Addressing a press conference at Benazir Bhutto Hospital, the YDA Rawalpindi representatives termed Dr Khan’s removal a political move, as an inquiry into the incident did fix blame on him.

“We protest over the removal of Dr Khan. He carries 30 years of experience in surgery and teaching. He was not directly responsible for cleanliness at the allied hospitals,” said YDA Rawalpindi President Dr Umer Saeed.

A government-appointed inquiry team, led by EDO Health Dr Zaffar Iqbal Gondal, had not mentioned Dr Khan as responsible for the rat-biting incident, said Dr Saeed, flanked by representatives of young doctors of the three allied hospitals.

The YDA representative said the hospital’s administration, headed by the medical superintendant, is responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of the hospital.

Dr Khan is due to retire by the end of December. Instead of seeing him off with respect the government has suspended him for something he is not responsible for, the young doctor said.

There is an ongoing inquiry against Dr Khan for alleged corruption and misuse of authority. Dr Saeed however refused to entertain this as a possible justification for Dr Khan’s removal, saying that he should not have been reinstated in the first place if there was a pending inquiry against him.

Dr Khan was removed from the post of RMC principal in 2010 following allegations of corruption and restored in January this year.

YDA Saying as below: Dr Saeed however refused to entertain this as a possible justification for Dr Khan’s removal, saying that he should not have been reinstated in the first place if there was a pending inquiry against him. Dr Khan was removed from the post of RMC principal in 2010 following allegations of corruption and restored in January this year. Then what is the justification of their demand. It means they were supporting corruption.
