Army reach summit with draw in Chaman

KARACHI: Army replaced KRL at the top of the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) despite a 1-1 draw against Afghan FC in Chaman yesterday.

Army took the lead in the 24th minute with Muhammad Ikram’s goal but Abdul Samad Khan equalised four minutes before the interval. With the result, Army hold top position with 47 points after 22 matches while Afghan FC remained seventh with 26.

“We have topped the points table twice and we need to make sure we stay there now,” Army manager Shafqat Mehmood told The Express Tribune. “I’ve told my players that we can’t afford to lose now as KRL have played four matches fewer than us and will have the advantage. It’s getting tough now.”

Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, Navy defeated HBL 3-1 in Karachi.

Muhammad Faran scored a brace to help his team win their fifth match in the league. Navy, who led 2-0 till the 85th minute – thanks to Faran’s goals – were given a late scare when HBL’s Atif scored with just five minutes remaining. Navy, however, sealed the victory with Muhammad Adnan’s goal in the 89th minute.

The win helped Navy move up to ninth place in the league table while HBL remained 14th, with relegation looming for the 37-year-old club.
