The source said Kuwait, also under investigation over a sports law, had escaped a ban.
The IOC's Executive Board, which is meeting in Lausanne, is expected to announce its decisions later on Tuesday.
The ban means an effective end to funding from the IOC to the national Olympic committee (IOA), no Indian officials attending Olympic meetings and Indian athletes banned from competing at the Olympics under their country's flag.
Lalit Bhanot, who spent 11 months in custody last year following corruption charges that plagued the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and who is out on bail, was confirmed for the post late on Friday after the rival faction pulled out ahead of Wednesday's election.
The IOC has been angered by government interference in the elections and had warned the IOA in a letter of a possible suspension.
The IOA has been directed by a Delhi court to hold the elections adhering to the government's sports code, while the IOC wants the governing body to abide by the Olympic charter.
The IOC blamed non-cooperation by the Indian government and the IOA for the current situation.

@Saim Baig: We Indians actually welcome this. Hopefully, this will result in cleaning up IOA. If you don't trust me just check Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra's opinion on this issue. You see, Indians prefer to bow down before truth rather than try to protect "honor" through thuggery.
@TrueBlue.. Thats what you did right now dude..
@Arijit Sharma: rectify or ratify ...... ;)

We comment only to rectify others misconceptions about us. This ban is very welcome.
Good news - need to clean up corruption in sports before we take part in Olympics
The IOA has been directed by a Delhi court to hold the elections adhering to the government’s sports code, while the IOC wants the governing body to abide by the Olympic charter.
So far as I know:-The Court of the land is superior to any outside body. India may not want to surrender such authority on internal matter to any institution, however great it may be, that is not wholly Indian. If a wrong precedent is set all & sundry will ride rough shod. Lalit Bhanot spent 11 months in jail not as a Convict but as an Under-trial, may be to prevent adverse influence on investigation. He was not sentenced. He is out on bail & presumed innocent. IOC is not a court that can decide who is guilty of which crime in India on a case that is still sub judice. Also, the action seems to have been taken in unbecoming hurry influenced by media trial. Now by forcing the issue IOC has invited for itself a potentially embarrassing situation while Indian authorities have not acted in a manner above board or in a diplomatic way either to prevent this.
headline a month from now " Ban on IOA revoked".
The Olympics seldom ban anyone - you have to ignore multiple warnings and do something really egregious to warrant that treatment. Time for India to wake up and smell the roses.
Most Indians support this wholeheartedly.
In fact I would want ICC to ban BCCI permanently.
All Indian sports authorities, especially cricket, tennis and olympics have become a cesspool of corruption, politics and filth of the rich and the powerful.
We need order, democracy and transparency.
@masen: u mean India has found a way to be the BCCI for Olymipcs, despite the ban ...... wow, confidence .... :)
Sad for Indian Athletes who would suffer from this decision and hope thr is a fair solution to this BUT I think Indian Olympic Association confused IOC with ICC and thought they would be as blind as those sitting in Dubai ICC Head office (for whom Money coming from Indian board is more important than cricket itself). Wish same would have been done with BCCI which is being operated fully by Ministry of Foreign Affairs India.
@Baloch U misunderstood its not Pakistan who got banned.
Perhaps this is due to Pakistan and linked to Mumbai attacks :P Pakistanis must have infiltrated IOC -
lets get it replicated in ICC as well - BCCI is bullying, corrupting and destroying Cricket as well
I'm happy that this happened coz Indian govt need to know that govt must be out of sports....Its not the Indians who should be embarrassed, its the Indian Govt. who should be embarrassed....I'm very happy at this development....
I wish the ICC does the same to BCCI, this will help in modernizing cricket.
Oh Thank God..! At least the Olympics would be cleaner from Fixing now..!
@ saim baig : Here they are The action is totally justified in my view. Any official or politician tainted with corruption should be shamed in this way if the state fails to act. Well done IOC!
