LAHORE: The Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC) has decided to convene an All Parties Conference (APC) in Karachi on December 30 to find out ways to restore peace in the city, announced DPC chairman Maulana Samiul Haq on Tuesday.

Haq, while speaking to the media after convening a DPC meeting, said that the heads of all parties including the Pakistan Muslim League’s Nawaz Sharif, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam president Maulana Fazlur Rahman would be invited to the APC, and a joint Peace March would be staged in the port city to underscore the need for an end to bloodshed and target killings.

Questioned if the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP) would be invited to the meeting, Haq said that the council would be happy if all the parties joined hands for solving Karachi’s issues.

Replying to another question, Haq said that the bloodshed and unrest in Karachi was not a sectarian issue and different forces were behind the killings who were competing with one another to secure control of the city.

Army nowhere to be seen

Defending the existence of DPC given the presence of strong national armed forces, Haq said that the body came into action to protect the country because the armed forces were nowhere to be seen.

Haq said that the country would not have been facing the menace of terrorism or the presence of the US agents on its soil if the armed forces were carrying out their duties.

He added that the country’s defense was the responsibility of the entire nation and the “parties representing the masses” realise that.

While expressing deep grief over the fall of Dhaka, the DPC leadership termed December 16 as the blackest day in the country’s history, and decided to stage a Peace March on December 16 from Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, up to the Wagha border.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Syed Munawar Hasan, Jamaatud-Dawa (JuD) Chief  Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, head of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Maulana Muhammad Ahmed Ludhianvi, Pir Saifullah Khalid, Lt Gen (retd) Hamid Gul, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Sardar Attique Ahmed attended the DPC meeting.
