Over 100 Ahmadi graves desecrated in Lahore
Eyewitnesses said 12 to 15 masked men, carrying weapons and excavation tools, had entered the graveyard in Model Town Q Block between 1:30am and 1:45am.
At least five of the men were reported to be carrying weapons, including 9mm pistols and a bigger gun.
The perpetrators removed and broke the tombstones of graves. They also told the caretakers that they were not supposed to write the Kalima or Bismillah on the tombstones because, “Ahmadis are infidels.”
“I was about to sleep for a while when I heard the sound of someone jumping inside the compound. When I was about to check who could be there, a number of men pounced on me, started beating me and took my gun,” said Muhammad Younis, a guard at the graveyard.
Younis told The Express Tribune that the attackers had a camera and took his picture after he was tied up. He said some of the attackers had climbed in from the rear wall of the graveyard and a few of them from the front.
The removal of tombstones began after everyone at the compound was tied up.
Around 20 people, including guests and families of the caretakers and guard, were locked up.
Three armed men stood guard outside the quarters where all caretakers were being kept.
On a mission?
Eyewitnesses who were locked in the quarters said they could hear that the attackers were receiving calls and were informing the person on the other line that they had started their mission.
The men were wearing black masks and were speaking Punjabi and Urdu. Their ‘leader’ had long hair, a beard and traces of Pashto in his accent.
They told the guard and others that they belonged to a banned organisation and the Taliban.
Younis only managed to make one phone call to the community’s head of security guards, Muhammad Asif. He was also locked up on arrival.
Eyewitnesses said the entire incident lasted for about 35 minutes. The perpetrators ran off in a hurry when a policeman, who is from the Ahmadi community and a guard at one of their worship places, arrived and fired in the air.
Asif said the attackers also took cell phones, wallets and money from three individuals.
No FIR was registered till the filing of this report, but members of the community said they will file one.
Community to take legal action
In July, 2012, Tufail Raza of the Khatme Nabuwat Lawyers Forum had approached the Liaquatabad Police Station in Lahore for the removal of Islamic inscriptions from tombstones at the graveyard. The graveyard had been established in 1980.
The police did not follow up on the application, but began pressurising the community to remove the text. In October, the Additional Sessions Judge of the Lahore Session Court had asked the police to act according to the law and had disposed of Tufail Raza’s petition.
Idrees Qureshi, the SHO of Liaquatabad Police Station, told The Express Tribune that the court order and application was with DSP Legal for his opinion on how to tackle the issue.
Qureshi said that more than 30 individuals from the Khatme Nabuwat organisation had visited the police station at least three times to ask for the removal of the tombstones.
When the SHO was contacted by The Express Tribune at 11:51am, he was not aware of the desecration incident. “I will send someone to look into this, when I get a call,” he had said.
Ahmed Munir, a member of the Ahmadi community who has been liaisoning with the police over the issue since July, said, “We cannot remove the Kalima ourselves, because it is against our faith, but we requested the police to look at the law and not interpret it the way the anti-Ahmadi elements asked them too.”
Saleemud Din, spokesperson of the Ahmadi community in Pakistan, had a question for the authorities, “this is not some obscure village in Hafizabad, this is Lahore and the neighborhood where the Sharif family lives, how is such an incident allowed to take place here?”
The community says they will take legal action against those who attacked the graveyard.

This incident happened in the vicinity of Mian Brothers homes. Do they have soft corner for such people. I remember when on 29th may 2011 ahmadyya place of worship in model town was attacked, some seriously injured were sent to Ittefaq Hospital, They were refused treatment on orders of the worthy " khadim e Alaa. No one is blaming Islam. Pakistan is being blamed because of its anti ahmadiya laws and because it has turned a blind eye to ongoing and escalating levels of oppression against Ahmadis (and Hindus and Shias). Yes in India too we have had some shameful acts of intolerance. But then civil society, media, judiciary partnered to improve communal harmony and fortunately in the last 11 years we have not had any communal event. Also from day 1 the constitution has not discriminated against people regardless of their belief system or absence thereof.

This is a direct result of ZAB's law in 1974 declaring Ahmadis as non-Muslim and further laws by Zia making their plight worse. In Pakistan - a preacher can come on TV and call Ahmadis wajib-ul-qatl and - a police actually desecrates their worship place because it had a dome - though the place was built before the 1974 law and - Lahore bar bans sale of Shezan juice because the company is owned by Ahmadis
None of this results in any adverse consequences for the oppressors. There is not the same level of outrage through electronic media or social media unlike the case of Palestinians or ROhingyas.

hey guys please calm and quite do not try to do any violence and promote this issue world wide bcoz this is useless these people mission is that the Muslim create violence and start to destroy their own shops and building on the road and fight each other and these all things create a bad impression of Muslim and Islam as well as Pakistan in front of all the countries.. Easy solution is to declare Pakistan a secular country and remove reference to Islam from the constitution. When laws are equal the society will fall in place.

Dr Saheb do you really think that it is the act of 15 or so people.? . Yes. may be 15 persons were personally involved in desecrating the graves of Ahmedis but don't you think that many many more do endorse their views and willing to behave in similar way. Unless a very good number of sympathizers exist in the society similar acts can not be carried out. If such acts are not opposed publicly in streets the mute spectators too are responsible for implied encouragement.

It would be great now if a group of Pure Pakistanis, i-e Punjabi Sunni Muslims decided to restore the damaged tombstones and pay their respects with flowers and an apology. To show solidarity with Ahmedis and reject the actions of these morons.
It would be greater still if religious groups or preachers in the public eye such as Junaid Jamshed made such a gesture, which I feel is their foremost responsibility in these times.

I am a Pakistani living in the US for last 10 year. There were times when Americans would listen to our point of view. Now they don't even want to have anything to do with Pakistani affairs. Now most of my American friends say, "Pakistanis are liar, cheats and are a JOKE". Come on so called Muslims of Pakistan!!! By persecuting minorities, you are not impressing anyone; you are rather bringing shame to not only your self but your fellow citizen. It is becoming hard by the going day to identify ourselves as Pakistanis. We are isolating ourselves on world stage by committing these shameful crimes against Hindus, Shias, Ahmedis, Christian missionaries. FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP!!!!

My younger brother (18) and uncle were murdered and buried in this graveyard! inalilahi wainailaihi rajiun :-( - they couldn't live in peace and now they can't die in peace. Can someone please go and fix their graves :-( I am thousands of miles away and it's killing me to see this picture - Oh Allah help us all as we are heading in the wrong direction (Aameen)

I think, all such crimes are taking place in Pakistan because a majority of the people there is too scared to face the Taliban and their supporters. The Government and the administrative machinery appear to be conniving with the culprits, or how else would one explain the inability of the state to identify these persons and prosecute them? It is indeed shameful for a country that boasts of being an Islamic country.

@Mena: The point you are making is the crux of the issue. why is it difficult to let Ahmedi;s be whoever they want to be. Allah did not give you guys right to decide who is a muslim or not. This is very sad and these so called Muslim have done this cruel action against Islam.Once the Holy Prophet s.a.w.s. was sitting with his followers and he saw passing a janaza.As he saw this he stood up to show respect to the dead people.Some one told him this (dead person) was a jews.Then the Holy Prophet s.a.w.s.replied if he is not a human being? The Holy Prophet s.a.w.s. teach us we should respect all dead people and after the death all human being should be respected as human being not like Muslim Jews etc.But our so called Muslim are far from this sunnet of the Holy Prophet s.a.w.s.

Holy Prophet S A W once stood up in respect of a Jew funeral but to day the so called his followers in Pakistan mock his teachings and no one dare to speak up against itWhere are the Noons,the Khans the Qaafs and the Bhuttos( perhaps they are all part of it).Most people are directly blaming PAKISTAN for this incident. the act of 15 people is not the real face of Pakistan and Muslims, if we think with a cool mind, we will realize that these people are also fighting against the other Pakistanis and people of other sects..... Churches burnt, temples demolished, processions bombed and now the dead as well. And then Pakistan lectures the west on tolerance and raises issues of Muslims being oppressed elsewhere. I think world leaders should spend a week in Pakistan to see 'true' tolerance at display.
