MANCHESTER: United midfielder Michael Carrick believes it is time Manchester United rediscovered their ruthless streak as they bid to regain the English Premier League title.

Alex Ferguson’s side visit strugglers Reading today looking to maintain their one-point advantage over rivals and defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table.

“We had a spell, a year or two ago, when we were starting games really well and killing teams off really early,” said Carrick. “We want to get back to that.”

Carrick admitted United’s performances had to improve after they struggled against Norwich, QPR and West Ham in their last three outings, especially as City - the only unbeaten team in the league - are hot on their tail.

Chelsea seeks revival at West Ham

Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez needs no reminder but the statistics are mounting up to confirm the task confronting him as he attempts to revive Chelsea’s season.

Chelsea’s trip across London to face West Ham at Upton Park today will carry much more significance than is normally attached to the fixture.

“We have to keep going forward, look at the positive things and win the games and fight, fight, in each game,” said Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu. “When we get the confidence, the goals will go in. The only thing is that, if we score, we can win.”

‘City needs more clean sheets’

Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic echoed Carrick’s view and called on the Premier League champions to add more clean sheets in December as they bid to overtake Manchester United.

Roberto Mancini’s side welcome Everton to Eastlands today and Nastasic wants the champions to keep it tight at the back even though they will have their hands full with Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini in town.

“Everything is going well for us,” he said. “In the last six games we have only conceded one goal - now we need to keep it going, but this time make it no goals.”
