HANOI:
Champagne, fireworks and public jubilation were conspicuously absent when Hanoi was chosen to host the 2019 Asian Games, with many Vietnamese deeply worried their country is not up to the task. With 10,000 athletes and coaches from 45 nations expected to flock to the country for the Games, there are fears the host nation, struggling from an economic turmoil, would struggle to deliver the required standards for such a mega event. Vietnam's Olympic Committee had initially proposed a budget of around $300 million, but the government slashed the sum as a result of the country's dire economic predicament. The real cost of the Games, scheduled to run for 16 days, is likely to spiral, but sports authorities have declined to provide detailed projections.
