Last week, a Syrian jet fighter dropped a cluster bomb on a playground. Ten children died and 40 were injured. Town residents uploaded images of the grisly carnage within hours. It was horrific. Under the Geneva Convention, only military targets are legitimate. Civilians and civilian buildings such as schools and hospitals are not acceptable targets.
President Barack Obama’s Administration is currently preparing guidelines that will ensure targeted assassination by unmanned drones are justifiable under the proper circumstances. President Obama in a recent interview with Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” said: “One of the things we’ve got to do is put legal architecture in place to make sure that not only am I reined in but any president is reined in, in terms of some of the decisions we’re making.” Many Americans are wary, believing the use of drones violates international law. It can be argued that President Obama’s Administration is not preparing guidelines but rather rejecting international convention that has for decades condemned extrajudicial killing.
Joe Scarborough, a talk show host on “MSNBC”, made some incisive comments while interviewing Time Magazine’s columnist Joe Klein. Scarborough remarked how the United States crossed all ethical lines when killing innocent people using drones. He said, “This is offensive to me … because it is done with a joystick in California — and it seems so antiseptic, it seems so clean — and yet, you have four-year-old girls being blown to bits because we have a policy that now says: Instead of trying to go in and take the risk and get the terrorists out of hiding in a Karachi suburb, we’re just going to blow up everyone around them.” Klein’s chilling response was, “The bottom line in the end is: whose four-year-old gets killed? What we’re doing is limiting the possibility that four-year-olds here (in the United States) will get killed by indiscriminate acts of terror.”
Drone strikes killed 112 children during the presidency of George W Bush. Up until this year, over 50 children were killed in drone strikes under the Obama Administration. Drones allow the United States to wage war by limiting its own military casualties. There is no need for horses and bayonets when one’s arsenal has Predators and Hellfires. Since “collateral damage” is no longer a congressional deterrent, there’s less of an incentive to value human life — demonstrating why “push-button warfare” is so deadly. Howard Zinn, an American historian, once said, “There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” He is right; war is destructive not only because it kills people but also because it erodes the moral fibre of the people who wage it.

@vasan: @Wonderer is just pulling your leg with his sarcasm. By no means is he so deluded as to believe the stuff he has posted- I have seen a lot of his posts, so am familiar.
and yet no one besides Pakistan cares. Ask yourself why. Could it be that the rest of the world sees Pakistan as a cesspit of terror ? Could it be that after hiding OBL no one believes anything Pakistan says ? Could it be that after years of exporting murder to other countries no cares what happens to Pakistan ? Could it be all of the above ? "The fault lies not in the starts , dear friends, but within ourselves '
Super star : Pak did try the same strategy for 64 years. Did it work, even for a little while ?. Repeatedly trying to implement a faulty strategy will repeatedly fail. As I have commented elsewhere, Pak will never and can never learn.
@vasan Why should Pak provide shelters and support to foreign and local terrorists in its soil ?
Dear friend. Answer is clear and straight. The people you refer to as terrorists are actually some "Dear Muslim brothers' to many in the Pakistani establishment. How can they go and eliminate them. Wont they be siding with the Kaffirs ? Those dear brothers can surely be brought to the discussion table and convinced that they should not target and bomb Pakistani cities towns and markets where innocent muslim brothers reside. They should be concinced to blow themselves and attack and bomb the Nato forces and Indian towns and cities which is perfectly ok as in that way only the children of non believers die. Their lives are worthless anyway as they are non Muslims! This will also make them "strategic assets"for the great Pure nation
Educated Pakistani ? or Educated in Pakistan ? I am sure you will find contradicting answers. Mr Wonderer. Same applies to Pakistan taught "History" as well.
@vasan:
Oh,come on, my dear Sir. All wars between Pakistan and India were started by India, but won by Pakistan. Those who India caught in Dhaka in 1971 were all Bengalis. Ask any educated Pakistani, or better still, why not read up some history?
Wonderer : Sure you can, since you started 1947, 1965 , 1971 and Kargil wars
@Author
".......war is destructive not only because it kills people but also because it erodes the moral fibre of the people who wage it....."
I wonder if we Pakistanis can claim the same for our erosion of moral fibre?
Drone strikes are organized, targeted towards terrorists, supported by even Senate and Parliaments across the world though there are dissents. Drone strikes are avoidable provided the govt of the target country, in this case Pakistan, does go about finishing the terrorists. Why should Pak provide shelters and support to foreign and local terrorists in its soil ? Why should pak provide support to these monsters who not only maim and kill civilians using cowardly methods, not only indoctrinate the kids and adolescents to make them suicide bombers, not only demolish educational institutions, not only threaten polio programs but also transcend national boundaries and try to impose their version of religion? Pl tell me why should the world watch in silence all these atrocities which is destroying not only pakistan but also threaten the neighborhood and far away lands. The other alternative for drones is open war, Can anyone suggest there will be less collateral damage in open wars either by Pak or by others. Why no one is raising the alarm bells that the terrorists are using children and innocent public as human shields by threats. There are innumerable incidents in which the terrorists have killed the local lashkars established even by the state to fight the terrorists. As I read in one of the articles, the terrorists are employing a fifth generation warfare which need to be demolished by the fifth generation weapons, ie drones. One long forgotten afghan war is enough, the current one cannot and should not finish till the terrorists are wiped out, by drones or by anything else.
So would you rather have US troops on the ground in your territory, becasue the Pakistani forces aren't doing their job - clearing the area of militants?
@author...by the way, in your article published in July you criticized Imran for whipping up anti-Americanism, while in fact his point of view is similar to yours that drone strikes are causing collateral damage in the form of civilian deaths and therefore need to be stopped. May I ask why double standards?
Recently came across article from an American officer who was put in charge for formulating controversial Operation Phoenix in Afghanistan. As it turns out, he was really unhappy with David Petraeus, you ask why? because he thought David was too concerned about Afghan civilians than American soldiers. As obvious, this is precisely the problem of hawkish elements of American defense establishment that they have a habit of pushing every thing under the rug in the name of collateral damage, which is the easiest way out of accountability.
The best way to avoid drone attack is to get away from mad elephant's path.Why childrens are used as human shield if lust for 'Jihad' is so high.They (talibans) are greedy cowards and are fully responsible for this killing of childrens.
Dear Author, you neglect to mention that drone strikes only happen because Pakistan does nothing about the various militant groups ("Assets") based in the FATA region! Where is Pakistan's "moral fibre" when it allows such groups to openly reside inside it's territory while they send suicide bombers to kill afghan children?
