ABBOTABAD:

At least 90 male mobilisers of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Population Welfare Department (PWD) have not been paid salaries for more than six months, officials of the department told The Express Tribune on Monday.

“The delay has exposed us to a financial crisis,” said a male mobile requesting anonymity. “I am unable to meet my household expenses and even the grocer has refused to lend me any more items on credit,” said the official.

Another said he could not afford to pay his daughter’s school fee and the school administration has warned to expel her if he fails to do so next month.

PWD hired the male mobilisers from union council across the province and they were tasked to mobilise men for birth control through contraceptives or tubal ligation of their wives if they have completed their families.

Around 500 male mobilisers were hired from across the province, while 96 were employed at Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram and Kohistan. They were hired at a fixed monthly salary of Rs7,000 and most of them have served for over five years. However, they have not been paid salaries since June.

Despite repeated attempts on his phone, the PWD Director General Fazal-e-Nabi was not available for comments.

An official at his office held the provincial finance department responsible for the delay. He expressed the hope that the salaries would be disbursed to the employees soon.
