According to Kashmir Media Service, the authorities had deployed hundreds of Indian police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel brandishing guns and bamboo sticks, in major and small lanes and by-lanes of Srinagar.
The armoured vehicles had been parked at major junctions while concertina wires had been laid on the roads and city entry points to stop the movement of people.
Ashura marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein (RA), the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW), in Karbala.
Meanwhile, the Indian authorities placed APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Shabbir Ahmed Shah under house arrest to prevent them from addressing public meetings.
Heavy contingents of police were deployed outside the residences of the leaders and were conveyed to stay indoors.

I was surprised to hear about CR Few. I don't even want to call it real name. It is just a BS. Pakistani Govt don't care about civilians safety. Pak govt Is just upper handed. I don't believe, Zardari is leader of the Nation. Such a shame. We need our independent Kashmir . Inshallah soon
@roger: Sooner or later, u v'll see the power of InshaALLAH
"muharram-processions-curfew-restrictions-imposed-in-srinagar" Much the best, excellent and august step taken by Indian army... Indian army keep it up....
@Raj - USA The sight of blood makes you uneasy? Imagine how Hussian (as) seeing the blood of his children and kin. We dont care for the opinion of the world, the world is worthless.
@bigsaf: Thank you for mentioning that Shia practitioners in Afghanistan donate blood during Muharram. I knew about this, but it just slipped my mind. Such acts should be appreciated and praised.
@Raj - USA. It is hard for a lot of people to comprehend what some people do out of love. Matam is a personal act. Let it be between the person who is doing matam and their God.
@Raj - USA:
Thanks for being elaborate, receptive to sensitivities and making a civil and non-prejudiced comment. For an outsider, it is perplexing.
This is not practised everywhere, even surprisingly in Shia Islamist Iran who seem to heed fatwas or clerics which have disallowed the practice. In Afghanistan, the Shia practitioners donate blood. I would encourage that this practice be implemented everywhere.
However, I don't think this alone is the reason for the bigotry and bombing massacres against the mourners, nor will necessarily end sectarian intolerance and attacks by Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband/Sunni extremists.
Kashmir is becoming like Pakistan. What is next?? ban motorcycles and cellphones!
I want these so called sufi Kashmiris...go to Pak..and see what happens to you'll by your muslim sunni brothers..They would have even killed Jinnah if he was around..cause Jinnah was Shia too..
Sam as in Pakistan.Sunni violence. If Kashmir is 'liberated' it will witness more fratricide and genocide.
When I was In Bahrain, my friends who are Shias themselves, cautioned me strongly against watching Muharram processions. They told me that in some processions those participating shall come out with cycle chains and chains / ropes with sharp razor blades attached to it. They beat themselves with these chains and ropes. After beating themselves 3 or 4 times they just fall wounded or unconscious on the floor and another person shall take his place immediately. Ambulances following these processions would pick the wounded / unconscious and take them to the hospitals. It is so horrifying and few die of self inflicted wounds and some end up with life-long disability. Bahrain is the only Gulf country allowing some Muharram processions. Parents, both Shias and Sunnis, were not allowing their children to watch these processions. It was totally banned in KSA but practiced in secrecy in some Shia regions in the Emirates. At the cost of being called anti Shia or anti Muslim, I would write that Shias should find some other way of mourning. Yes, I know that Shias want to actually feel the pain their loved ones felt, but some other way that is not so violent and horrifying to the sight would bring a better message. This is what I feel. My sincere feeling is that these promote inter-sect hatred and enmity. Additionally, such horrifying visuals to non-muslims convey a strong message that Islam is a violent religion. In India, I have seen that they mostly beat their chests with their fists and sometimes whip themselves with leather whips which is not so horrifying. Anyhow, that was many years ago and these practices may have changed now.
@The Real Bloch: What about Baloch
@Truth Detector: both india and pakistan are same in banning muslims processions i mean shia processions
@Truth Detector: >>to prevent people from taking out Muharram processions. Wow, biggest liberal & secular democracy in the world !!!!
the news is incomplete, let me complete it.
to prevent the radical forces with radical ideology form invoking trouble and disturbing the peace by resorting to rioting, the Indian government deployed additional forces as a precautionary measure to stop the radicals and to maintain peace and order. However, given the radical influence from across the border, more forces might be called as and when required.

@The Real Bloch: Inshallah you will get your real baluchistan soon don't worry
mean while in Pakistan, operation of mobile phones are banned, motorcycles are banned. text messages urging for shias to be killed is being circulated. in the last 4 to 5 days more than 4 bomb blasts killed dozens. dozens of target killers were arrested, and many fell victim in target killings.
and here they are, talking of Kashmir, just do a simple calculation, calculate how many Muslims in Pakistan have fallen victims to bomb lasts, target killings etc in past 6 months and do the same for Kashmir, you will get the real picture of genocide.
ET--"brandishing guns and bamboo sticks,The armored, concertina wires had been laid on the " when you deploy the police and the military, you don't deploy them with water pistols or pillows. be it in US, India, Pakistan. every military use those guns or armored vehicles, so by highlighting that Indian forces are using these, you are not only showing your bias, but your immaturity too.
Ban on Muharram procession in Srinagar is in force since 1990 onwards but not in rest of Kashmir. There are two versions of the ban imposed ie militancy started in Kashmir in 1990 after this procession in Srinagar and secondly that procession might be attacked by the militants. However, peaceful Muharram processions are taken out all over India and no attacks on them are reported for many decades.
is there any option for these people?
1>If they come under Pak , all shias and ahmadias will be wiped out. 2>rest sunnis will be butchered by taliban.
We may to follow their curfew example.
@The Real Bloch: u have been saying this since 1947.........but even ur inshallah couldn't do anything..LOLOLOLOL
