Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi has cancelled his trip to Pakistan but has requested his deputy Mahmoud Mekki to represent him at the Developing Eight summit (D-8), officials said on Thursday.
Mursi, who helped broker a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, said in a statement that he would now stay home to monitor the truce. Mursi had been scheduled to address a joint session of parliament in Islamabad.
According to a statement issued by the National Assembly (NA) secretariat official, President Asif Ali Zardari had summoned the joint session of the parliament on Friday where the Egypt president was due to address, which now stands cancelled in accordance with the presidential order.
Officials at NA secretariat informed The Express Tribune that “the cancellation of the visit was not conveyed by the Egyptian foreign ministry.”
When contacted, an official confirmed that the Foreign Office was not aware that President Mursi had bowed out until the arrival of Egypt’s Vice President Mahmoud Mekki, who now heads Egypt’s delegation at the D-8 Summit.
Mursi would have become the first Egyptian president to visit the country in almost four decades had he gone ahead with the trip.

@Tony: You ve spoiled it for the trolls. Our President really had his hands full to allow him to leave the country.
OK so first Bangladesh PM shied off then the Malaysian PM and it looks like Egypt President also did not come. What about the remaining 4 premiers? Did they show up?
@jugnoo
Thanks for the breaking news. We did not know that.
JI and Brotherhood are one in their approach so one can not rule out JI factor for the absence of Mr. Morsi.
Hasina Wajid also did not come because pak Govt did not apologize for war crimes in 1971 committed against Bagladeshies.
@khan: Its in genes of Muslims to be dictatorial! He wants all power to himself like a pharoh.
@Caramelized_Onion: Also a leader doesnt fly to dubai for dubious medical needs when there is a crisis. or fly to a Villa in France when there are floods in the country. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Pakistan where leadership is in absentia.
@ everyone above, he stayed their mainly for Palestinians, may be we can learn something, and help our Muslim brothers in need, rather than giving our enemies supply routes to kill our brothers and sisters
Hes staying home because the courts r looking at ways to impeach him for breaking the constitution..
Pakistanis, take notes, this is how a leader deals with a crisi situation. He doesn't fly to London for his son's graduation, he stays at home. Learn, learn learn and REMEMBER
Ha ha, I knew this would happen. What happened to others (Indonesia, Iran, etc)?
Brother Arab country! Actually, he stayed at home to fire his chief law officer and become a dictator
