The resolution was presented by MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar and was opposed by Awami National Party (ANP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).
ANP had opposed the resolution as the party wanted to deweaponise Karachi only while the MQM opted for deweaponisation of the entire country.
The ANP had moved a motion in the Senate earlier seeking effective measures from the government to deweaponise Karachi in view of the prevailing law and order situation.
Dr Sattar, speaking to the media after the NA session, said that the problem of terrorism should be rooted out from the country. “Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and all places where innocent Pakistani are being killed will be cleansed [through deweaponisation].”
The MQM leader expressed hope that the deweaponisation bill, which the MQM presented in January 2011, will also be approved.
He said that the first step in deweaponisation would be to hunt down the factories of weapons and then the sellers – whether they are inside or outside the country – and take action against them.
“We have invited all political parties to come onboard for the sake of national interest,” he added.
The issue of military operations in Karachi and deweaponisation sprang up after a recent bomb blast that took place near an imambargah in Karachi.

Yess De Weaponise Pakistan ...Why Only Karachi ?? MQM We Are With You
@True pciture: Apparently there is a need to watch international current affairs program called news.
It starts with sanctions, media subversions and when countries are nice tendered up boots on the ground comes.
@Candid 1: Iraqis said that too.
When attack on Malala in Swat, they demanded operation only in N.Waziristan, and when Karachities demanded DE-weaponize the city, they cry "Why only Karachi, why not the whole Pakistan???" isse kehte hen Khulla tazzaad :D
@Dr Asif: Sir, weapon is extensively used in Karachi, and not in other parts of country. dozens killed on daily basis. Well why not MQM said the same thing for the whole country, when they were demanding operation in N.Waziristan after malala attack.
@Editor: Why amendment made to my comments. My original comment was "Good idea MQM, if cancer is in a finger, cut down the whole body"
Point is, why wound you need a weapon?
I dont recall seeing any news where people used their weapons for self-defence so obviously they are misused.
The problem of terrorism should be rooted out from the country. “Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and all places where innocent Pakistani, then why just in karachi? Deweaponize the entire country and for once take the task seriously. All the weapons in the country emanate from the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa. The reason, it is their cultural inheritance to move around with weapons. In Darra Adamkhel, you have the largest arms bazaar in the country and that is from where the flow of weapons started in the first instance.
@Kashif Dada: couldnt be more precise than this
Yes, Deweaponize the entire country without any discrimination, not only Karachi.!!
I think we better start from Karachi since more people died there compared to KPK, Baluchistan & Punjab combined in this year !!! startling fact isn't it? and we thought that KPK was unsafe but its the truth, over thousand people have been killed this year in Karachi alone. Government should make it sure that people's lives are secured in Karachi & should start a clean up operation asap, across the board, to apprehend the killers. Pakistan Zindabad.
@Jewcifer: what a stupid analogy! Pakistan is no Iraq nor Libya, no one would dare such an adventure, look how the super power (US) got a bad beating in Iraq & not to forget Afghanistan :) Iraq had a very weak army & Afghanistan had no army & still they are able to kick out the invaders. Pakistan has way better army than both these countries so your wish can never become true, sorry :) P.S you were way off the topic!!!
If MQM workers are unarmed, peace loving, law abiding citizens, why do they fear clean up operation?
@H.A. Khan: @Hu: @Salman Nisar: @Uza Syed: Well said and well placed comments. Now from every nook, corner, and rat's hole a weapon is trickling and gushing into Pakistan, especially Karachi. If the rest of the country is not fed up of fighting and killing each other and want to deweaponize Karachi, it is suggested you look inside your own shirt. Surely, the citizens of Pakistan want peace and stability so they can go ahead with life. If they are not, well at least, I am. Salams
@Jewcifer: Keep your wet dreams to yourself, we are not iterested in your pervert fantasies.
first off, there is no urban or rural region in pakistan where we see corpse in gunny bags everyday, extortion by political parties, animals hides being snatched, land grabbers with political patronage, so most effected area should be cleaned first,
secondly, weapon doesnt shoot on its own, there is a criminal mind behind the trigger that pulls it who should be taken care of
3rd; illeagal weapons should be confiscated across the country but what if some1 kills with liscenced weapon and with a political patronage (still a lethal combination)
and least but not least; weapons making factories is an industry and this world needs weapons for good reasons too, Turkey has one of the bigegst local weapons making industry but does it have what we see in KHI?
we all know that nothing significant will be done and this is all topi drama. people getting caught and then released on phone calls will not solve any problem. the whole system needs to be changed.
Though I don't see MQM's stance being completely objective, I must admit that their point makes sense
Ya... And that was a call for all Illegal weapon to go underground..... take that in your face! To bad .. The only loser is Pakistan ...l again.
It sounds nice. But can you really imagine the people you have to worry about actually complying? Succeeding in taking their weapons involves... 1. Finding out where they hide 2. Raiding the house while they shoot at you 3. You arrest them 4. You search for weapons and confiscate them 5, They're released
That sounds awfully familiar to what happens already. It's still not a bad idea, in theory. But it's absolutely nothing that will stop much of anything that actually inspired the action.
Very Smart Move by MQM....check & Mate !
Its is a great idea. And why restrict it to Karachi. The whole country is flooded with arms. Are these weapons not freely available in KPK as well. Are there innocent llives not being lost there?
De-weponise the entire country and let there be peace and security
What a stupid stand?! Just deweaponize Karachi, why not the whole country? Why would anyone in her/his right mind want to oppose such a good idea, it's beyond me. I support MQM and its leadership on this wise resoluton, let us deweaponize our country completely. Deweaponization of the whole country is the only way, you just can't deweaponize one city in isolation, how can you, does the city exist in a closed box protected by some kind of firewalls? I as a citizen of Pakistan from Karachi would just not go along with people and parties like ANP & Nawaz Muslim League etc. to take away my gun whereas the rest of the country is free to have whatever weapons they wish to carry and use, which could be easily brought to my city and target me and my loved ones for whatever reasons. Thank you for your this 'sincere gesture' to deweaponize me and render me helpless, thank you really, but no not with me sirs!
Is this a ploy to avoid deweaponization of Karachi? I think so.Still, I would say yes.But start from karachi and go up quickly.
Germans enforced gun control before the Holocaust. We all know it didn't turn out well for Jewish people.
Looks like Pakistanis will be getting Iraq or Libya style invasion in coming years.
