Mutual cooperation: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Fars, sign 18-point bond

PESHAWAR:

In a ‘historic’ move, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Iran’s Fars province signed an 18-point agreement for cooperation in various sectors.

K-P’s Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti and Fars Governor Hussain Sadiq Abideen signed the documents on behalf of both governments at the Chief Minister House here on Saturday.

Both countries have agreed to cooperate in furthering education, health, tourism, power generation, oil and gas exploration and agriculture. In the initial stages, oil and gas exploration and power generation will be prioritised.

CM Hoti said the agreement was historic because now K-P will be entering a pact with a province of another country.

He said that Iran and Pakistan enjoy cordial relations. His visit to Iran last year was a result of new powers granted to the province after the 18th amendment, he said, adding that private sectors of both countries should come forward for investment.

Gov Abideen said that this contract will serve well in the future, adding that Pakistan and Iran will jointly fight elements conspiring against Muslim countries.

MoU signed between universities

A 19-member delegation visiting from Iran also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Peshawar (UoP) and the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) to encourage exchange programmes for students and teachers.

The MoU signed by UoP’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Qibla Ayaz and SUMS’s Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Hadi Imanieh is valid for five years. Provincial Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain and Gov Abideen were also present on the occasion.

According to the MoU, scientists from both institutions will work together on research projects. Researchers will be required to draft a progress report at the end of each academic year.

Researchers will also be exempted from education and registration fees. The host university will assist the visiting students and provide suitable housing and guidance services, the MoU reads.
