A poor Indian boy meets a rich British-Indian girl in London and takes her on a reality-check trip. In the process of realising who she actually is, they both fall in love — that’s the primary plot of Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ).
The story is full of romance, fury and flimsy twists, yet still manages to grip the audience — but then again, aren’t all Yash Chopra’s films similar? Without much difference from his previous productions, JTHJ is also based on the escapist formula of the typical Yash Chopra films, with an overwritten screenplay and stone-age expository techniques.
The good
Outstanding performances by the lead cast and captivating melodies by AR Rahman — with unconventional music and Gulzar’s addictive lyrics — actually save JTHJ from being a total failure.
May I say Hurt Locker? Shahrukh Khan (SRK) plays a role of an Indian army soldier, not to mention he is also a singer and a waiter, from the bomb disposal squad named Samar Anand. The bomb-defusing sequences in Hurt Locker and JTHJ are practically the same. The only difference is that Samar arrives to the bomb site on a Royal Enfield. Looking surprisingly young, SRK delivers his best performance since Chak De India and Swades with his everlasting romantic charm. After watching JTHJ, it also becomes clear that certain one-liners only seem plausible when coming from the King Khan himself.
Katrina Kaif plays the role of Meera — a filthy rich British girl of Indian origin. She is the typical Barbie doll — slender and sexy, but shockingly not as wooden as she usually seems. Since everything is possible in a Yash Raj production, the spoiled, chauffeur-driven Meera falls in love with Samar, the waiter.
Anushka Sharma never fails to impress and her natural spontaneity and bubbly attitude is perfect for a role of documentary film-maker Akira Rai. She is on a project assisting the crew of the Discovery Channel when she meets Samar at an army camp. The choreography stands out and watching Akira move through the serene valley of Jammu Kashmir is believable because of the natural and free-flowing dance moves she performs.
The bad
The plot is not coherent. The editing and shooting of some sequences is so similar to Hurt Locker that you wonder whether YRF took permission from the film’s producers to replicate their film scenes. Samar is a fearless soldier of the bomb disposal squad who never wears a protection kit because he likes to live on the edge. A few scenes later, Akira pops up going through the officer’s diary (which was expected) to unveil his past love story with Meera who he met in London. How the love triangle eventually begins is for you to go and watch. Sadly, Bollywood still hasn’t stepped away from unrealistic narrative tools like Amnesia, car accidents and personal diaries that bring about the truth.
The ugly
Perhaps some of the worst scenes in the film are the ones without any explanations. Like when Akira goes to find the angry major after he defuses the bomb and to her surprise, she finds him singing loudly in the middle of the valley, without any solid justification. Another scene similar to this is how Samar evolved into becoming an Indian army Major posted in Kashmir from being a waiter in the United Kingdom.
The weakest scene of the movie was when Samar (while suffering from amnesia) manages to recall the bomb defusing drill after hearing a siren and identifies the type of the bomb by looking at a school bag in which it was hidden.
While the dialogues are not memorable and the poem that Samar (SRK) narrates titled “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” seems childish, the frequency at which he found planted bombs in Jammu Kashmir seemed as if he was in Bajaur or maybe even Iraq.
A humble side of the character is shown when he gives all his savings to Zain, his Pakistani roommate, so that he can invest in his business and return the money to Samar when he is able to. A point that can offend our Pathan brothers is that Zain, although shown as a stereotypical Pathan, is of Lahori origin with a strong Punjabi accent. Research has been a major casualty throughout Chopra’s films; after all, not every woman wears a burqa and says adaab in Pakistan as shown in Veer-Zara.
The verdict
No matter how diverse and awe-inspiring the legacy of Yash Chopra is, Jab Tak Hai Jaan did not add anything great to his show reel. The sentimental value attached to his films might burden his fans from being over-critical for the time being, but the fact is that JTHJ is full of scattered, unrealistic melodrama.
Like Matrix, it’s just a matter of taking the red pill and accepting that it was a half-hearted attempt by Chopra. That’s not to say that one shouldn’t go watch JTHJ. The film definitely deserves a viewing since the late director is to be credited for giving us the perfect romance and attractive heartaches with his previous work. As an avid Yash Chopra fan, for me, it was disappointing.
Correction: An earlier version of the article incorrectly stated that Samar arrives to the bomb site on a "Harley Davidson" instead of "Royal Enfield". The correction has been made.

awsome movie shahrukh is the king love him cha gaya ha cheeta n king of romance yash sir
This movie is magical. It makes u wanna fall in love over and over again. I loved it and watched it twice. Srk is the king of romance and noone can do romance like Sharuhk can. People who write bad reviews only do it because they like Salman and has got nothing to do in their lives. Its pathetic guys. Its doesnt have to be a Khan war everytime. I am not a Salman fan but I dont write bad reviews on his films just cause I dont like him. I appreciate all types of films and I must JTHJ is a superb film. Storyline is so clever and It is as good as veer-zaara.
Movie is much disappointing in story and editing...

Movie was flop..SRK must stop Romantic Movies ..now he is too old for that and he must accept that
Dear wanderer and other recommenders, Please do not encourage others to part with their hard-earned cash! It's not worth it. It was sentimental nonsense and i especially endorse Nida nehmood when she writes that good OLD Shahrukh is now WAY past his prime. He really needs to rethink his future film roles and can't imagine that the audience will be this credulous to believe him to be someone in their twenties.
Dear Readers,
Kindly ignore the reviews by Mr. Auhthor.
DO WATCH THE MOVIE!!!!
It is a beautiful movie with superb cast, beautiful location, superb acting and a good story atleast for the sake of "love story" it is not cheesy and all.
What a crap movie it was. SRK as a 25yr old waiter, give me a break. He looked atleast 45. Please stop romancing younger actresses. Doesnt suit him atall. I dont know why he even attempted to do a younger role. Waiter turned bomb disposal squad leadrer. Whoaaa!!! Give me a break!!!!! Anushka needs to get out of the sterotype. Its getting a pain now. The bomb defusal scene which with a snap of finger brings back SRK's "memory" was the dumbest scene EVER. I mean this is 2012 please make sensible movies. This was not supposed to be the low IQ masala type movie and I for one was expecting much more from YC last movie.
The only good thing was Katrina's item number.
Movie was very good people are loving it..after a long time a have seen such a romantic film
Awesome film it has got 8.6 out of 10 on imbd and new york times has given 3.5 out of 5 movie is awesome
I watch the movie at Dubai , and i enjoyed it , i think Rafay has been too critical about the movie , the locations was beautiful , the songs were melodious and the cast was the best in the avalible lots , so i say it was my moneys worth
Forget the reviews for the sake of writing, movies are about feel good and a joy of watching and just enjoy the ride it is taking you. You cannot be really realistic, no movies are not even Hollywood. Watching JTHJ, you will fall in love. The undergound dance and music was mind blowing (Katrina's dance owesome). It is better than Veer Zara simply great humor, great story and great cast's performances. Katrina and Anushka are a breath of fresh air and this is srk at his best.
This is pretty disgusting to say that Pahtans will be offended by Speaking Punjabi. Punjab is a land of immigrants and many migrants have make Punjab their home overtime and now they identify themselves with Punjabi identity. Niazis, Durranis and Kakazais those who live in Punjab never ever Speak Pushto and they all speak Punjabi only and also visit Mianwali to see that Niazis and all Khans speak With a Heavy Punjabi accent and they cannot speak Pushto at all. So do your research on your part and then talk about it that what is a language trend and what is meant by Punjabi ethnicity.
What the heck you are talking about that Pathans will be offended by Speaking Punjabi???. These so called Pathans of Lahore are not Pushto Speaker for your information and they came from India and only to look distinguished they call themselves Pathans and they dont look like Pukhtoons and even they dont like Punjabis and they are somehow highly tanned and you can pass them for South Indians. Secondly If someone is offended by one language then He should leave my city as everyone here can Speak and Understand Punjabi and we are Proud of our heritage and if someone got problems or got offended then they should go back to their lands and leave our cities for good.
Being a fan of yash chopra, i found this movie to be a drag. The locales are good, but there is no justification for the twists, story looks unreal. The writer correctly put it that it is the burden of respect for yash chopra that may be holding the honest feedback from the reviewers.
Bad scripts and films are becomming commercial hits and this may set a wrong direction. However, bollywood is churning out a lot of variety and am sure it will cater for every taste. JTHJ Film is an emotional atyachar!!! it will not be remembered for long.
the scene where srk defuses the bomb on the london train......it was simply HILARIOUS!
@ioii: cry baby :p.............. some people never stop whining...:P
movie was badddd....the script was rubbish! very disappointing!
A very subtle but accurate observation was when in the first part of the movie (in 2002) the Lahori man says "Khuda Hafeez". From the second part of the movie (in 2012) he only says "Allah Hafeez".
Very good movie ... Good thing was it did not included any low category jokes which directory are using these days to get famous...
I think Sami Saayer's review was way more brutally honest and accurate (in my opinion, of course). http://gypsy-therebirth.blogspot.com/2012/11/jab-tak-hai-jaan-film-review.html
the film was so so.................the first half was interesting..............2 nd half kinda seemed a lil boring...............
