A perfect recipe for brutality

Letter September 05, 2010
Pakistan is caught between 2 extremes. The mullahs insisting on enforcing their interpretation of Islam.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Amina Jilani’s article “A perfect recipe for brutality” (September 3). Pakistan is caught between two extremes. On the one side are mullahs insisting on enforcing their parochial interpretation of Islam and on the other are the liberal elite hell-bent on wiping out Islamic culture and replacing it with an imported western lifestyle. Religious fanatics dominate madrassas and mosques while liberal fanatics dominate the media and corporations. In between is a moderate-salaried class who have no ideology of their own. They practice bits from both school of thoughts and are confused. Until this middle class develops a strong ideology of their own to which they passionately aspire and strive to implement, our country will remain a mess.
