Dual nationality: Parliamentarians given till November 30 to submit affidavits

By-elections in Sindh, Punjab postponed till December 4 due to Muharram.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), granting reprieve to members of the national and provincial assemblies,  gave a November 30 deadline for submitting dual nationality affidavits, Express News reported on Monday.

The ECP also postponed the by-elections in Sindh and Punjab till December 4.

The elections were postponed due to Muharram after a plea was filed in this regard.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim was presiding the meeting of the commission where the dates were set and the request for an extension was approved.

Additional Secretary Election Commission Afzal Khan said that the members of the parliament had gone for Hajj and that is why the deadline was pushed further.

Those members who have not submitted attested affidavits were issued directives again and will be written letters to as well.

"“It is suspected that 90 per cent of office holders, who have failed to submit declarations, hold dual nationality,” a senior ECP official said while talking to The Express Tribune." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The issue is dual nationality on the day they stood for elections, so even if they now discard dual nationality the crime is still there.
