Accusing Pakistan: Karzai vows to hunt down Malala attackers

Afghan president urges Pakistan to fight the rising terrorism in the country.

MUMBAI: In an interview with India’s CNN-IBN television network, Afghan President Hamid Karzai promised to hunt the Taliban attackers who shot Malala. “Afghanistan will hunt for Malala’s attackers,” Karzai said as he began a four-day visit to India.

Karzai also accused Islamabad of having armed and trained the teenager’s assailants. “Terrorism is a snake and when you train a snake, you can’t expect it will only go in the neighbour’s house,” he said.

Karzai’s promise to crackdown on Malala’s attackers come in the wake of a confirmation from US officials that Mullah Fazlullah, a commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, is hiding in Afghanistan. Fazlullah was reportedly behind the attack on Malala.

Look Americans, don't go after Mullah Fazlullah because Pakistan wants you to. Go after him because he ordered his gunmen to kill a 14-year-old girl just because she wanted an education. Don't do it for Pakistan, do it for Malala.

@B: The Washington Post has already reported in "Pakistani militants hiding in Afghanistan" that the drones have made the lives of Pakistan-based terrorists so bad they're fleeing across the border into Afghanistan where they are living in safety! That same report also published a map showing the areas of operation of the TTP and Haqqani Network. The TTP's was in Kunar, Nuristan and Pakistani areas extending into Swat. The Haqqani Network's was entirely within Afghanistan!

That's why the above quote should really be re-phrased to "Whatever United States and Afghanistan. First go get the Haqqanis and Fazlullah, then we'll consider listening to your outburst."

I don't know what you were trying to do but you obviously didn't do any research before posting here.

Jique | 12 years ago | Reply @B: Afghanistan is the one who started the whole dynamic of terrorism-sponsorship against Pakistan, it is only bearing the fruits of its own labor in the form of Pakistani retaliation. The Afghans are in no position to complain and neither are the Americans because they're the ones who made this whole mess when there was absolutely no need to.

It has fully allowed drones to pound away at North Waziristan and is jointly building a mechanism with Washington to give the Afghan Taliban safe passage into the peace process so if you think you can draw equivalence between Haqqanis and Fazlullah you are mistaken. Please try again.

Why should Pakistan go after Haqqanis? They are already based mostly in Afghanistan. It is utterly ridiculous to compare Pakistan's links with the Afghan Taliban to Afghanistan's backing of Fazlullah. Sorry B, you'll have to do better than tossing my own words back at me.

I read the whole transcript of the interview Karzai gave CNN-IBN. He was basically telling Pakistan: we'll keep sponsoring Mullah Fazlullah's terrorism against you, play the India card in the hope of intimidating you, and court the Afghan Taliban that we hate you so much for having links with. This on top of maintaining illegal claims on half of Pakistani territory. He's using Fazlullah as a tool against Pakistan but he can't possibly make good on any of his other wishes because Pakistan is just too well-positioned in the Afghan peace process.

The Afghans used to deny Fazlullah's and TTP's presence in Kunar and Nuristan. The Afghan National Army is always available there to attack Pakistani army checkposts and border villages but never to crack down on the TTP in their own territory. I hope they have also now seen and understood why Pakistan has been shelling their country lately.

Tlaxcala | 12 years ago | Reply Karzai is just showing desperation to relieve pressure off himself now that even American officials have admitted Fazlullah is in Afghanistan and is backed by the Afghan government, he's trying to deflect growing international pressure off himself with more vain mud-slinging. This pressure tactic hasn't worked on Pakistan in the past when it was in a much weaker position, and it will not work now.
