A legendary former cricketer and a pop singer turned activist have been identified among those who operate dozens of bank accounts, own luxury vehicles and are frequent flyers to various destinations of the world but do not have national tax numbers and are not paying tax on their incomes.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has completed its homework and these so-called “big fish” are among 45 identified tax dodgers who will soon receive legal notices asking them to file their income tax returns.
The moves are part of the FBR’s endeavour to bring at least three million people in the tax net who remain outside it due to both the corruption of FBR officials and the corrupt practices of individuals.
The FBR has collected the information about these individuals from the National Database and Registration Authority, National Highway Authority, Excise Department and cross-checked it with its own databank. The Express Tribune has withheld the names, Computerized National Identity Card Numbers and pictures of those indentified at the request of authorities
The pop singer is from Narowal district of Punjab and lives in Defence Housing Authority, Lahore. He is among 45 individuals who are not familiar with the concept of paying tax.
This iconic figure has made as much as 46 trips abroad and spent 268 days overseas during the last five years. He is also known for his charitable work for the provision of health services to the needy.
His major destinations remain London, Manchester, Muscat, Kuwait, Frankfurt, Dubai, Doha, New York, Birmingham and Bangkok. Presumably, he might have gone to perform in concerts and his visits could be financed by his host, however, his income is not exempt from taxes.
He owns a BMW and a Corolla and maintains 23 bank accounts in almost all major banks. His last bank account was opened at Bank Alfalah in May of this year.
According to the FBR, in this nation of 180 million, only 1.02 million are genuine taxpayers.
After retiring from international cricket in 2003 the cricketer, who held the world record of maximum score in one day for a longer time, has now devoted his life to preaching Islam. He lives in Defence Housing Authority in Karachi. He also does not have NTN and pays no income tax.
Since December 2007, the cricketer travelled abroad on 26 occasions, spending 259 days overseas. The cricketer has two vehicles and operates 12 bank accounts, with the last one being opened at Standard Chartered Bank in July 2012.

This is the only one side of the story. We should also hear the other side of the story before making any biased judgement.
i thhink tribune people are playing kasauti !!!! my guesss would be saeed anwar andd abrar ul haq !!! did i win ?????
Saeed Anwar... caught badly ... I knew something is going to happen with him after his views about Imran Khan's personal life in public.
Allah protect tribune from PTI supporters as their youth president is being exposed by tribune. A long series of accusations from PTI expected against this report. Wish u luck express tribune. And shame on such revolutionary change slogan by pti.
The past cricketers should also be probed for tax default. How come there is no tax record prior to 1991, whereas the celebrity cricketer played for County Cricket in England, appeared in beverage and ciggarette advertisements and has been enjoying the beaches of Europe??
This story just reminds me of an old joke where punch line was "baRa bujhia ayee" @sana: Abrar ul haq, saeed anwar incase if someone still trying to guess
President PTI Youth wing Abrar ul Haq on FBR's list !!! Where is change , Where R clean PPL ?
Good for them both Abrar and Saeed have no qualified to join PML-N since the party head pays no tax.
Shahbaz,
It is true that only 1.2 million pay income tax out of a nation of 180 million but not all of them are taxable!
If you include those that are taxed under with-holding schemes the number that do pay tax rises by some 40-45 million.
out of 180 million, 1.02 million r tax payers,
should i suppose we have children under 18, we have any housewives too, unemployed, [out of nation of 180 million]
@Blithe: In PTI there is one tax payer who pays more tax than the total tax all members of all parties pay in Pakistan. I do not wish to name him but maybe the Government would like to disclose his name.
Why pick two names from the estimated 3 million who fall in the same category???
Is this article a riddle to guess the name using clues??
I recall it was discovered after the whole Rahat Fateh Ali Khan fiasco at Indian customs that he did not have a tax ID in Pakistan either.
Why are most tax defaulters in PTI?
Abraar ul Haaq in the dock
I believe they are talking about Abrar ul Haq and Mohamad Yousuf but I am not sure. I still dont get it....why not disclose names.
Regardless of these few celebs...its shocking that after over 60 years we still cant get the tax system that works properly. If it take 10 years to find out about a celebrity (2003 - 2012) imagine how long would it take to find out about millions who dont pay tax and they are not even famous so you cant easily find out about them. I am talking about people running grocery stores, meat shops, auto shops, bakeries, real estate advisors etc ..etc...
Only if we can collect and spend our revenues properly I have no doubt Pakistan will be more powerfuly then Isreal, Singapoe, Hong Kong. We wont have any crisis...Hopefully one day...

Why not just name him if you were going to make it so obvious.
