Famed for its houseboats on placid lakes, clean air and mountain scenery, Kashmir was a popular international get-away until an armed insurgency against rule from New Delhi erupted in 1989.
"We no longer advise against travel to Jammu and Srinagar, nor against travel on the Jammu to Srinagar highway," the British High Commission said in an update on its website posted Tuesday.
Srinagar is Kashmir's summer capital and home to the famous Dal Lake, while Jammu serves as the winter capital.
Muslim-majority Kashmir, set in the foothills of the Himalayas, is divided between India and Pakistan along the heavily-militarised Line of Control border.
It was plagued by violence for decades as local militants fought for the region to become independent or part of Pakistan, but unrest has fallen sharply in recent years and domestic Indian tourism has boomed.
"The improvements in the security situation has led us to lift the advisory against UK citizens travelling to both cities, Jammu and Kashmir," British High Commissioner James Bevan said.
Bevan said the decision to lift the warning would boost foreign tourism and benefit the local economy.
Britain, which first issued a Kashmir travel advisory in 1995, still advises against travel to other parts of the region except for Ladakh.
The United States strongly recommends its citizens avoid travel to Kashmir.

@sensible: "for the past 65 years Kashmiris are fighting for their rights"
Wrong there was no insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir from 1947 to 1989. In fact when Ayub Khan sent Pakistani soldiers dressed up as tribals into India in 1965, it is the Kashmiris that brought this issue to Indian government's attention. It is only after end of Afghan war that foreign paid mercenaries were pushed into India by Pakistan that there was trouble. Once Vajpayee made it clear that he would no longer tolerate the deliberate infiltration by Pakistan in 2002, Musharraf started his out of box thinking and wound down his support to paid mercenaries to India. As a recent, peace has returned to the valley and so has tourism.
@1984: Yes, and only in India is the term "Pakistan Occupied Kashmir" ever used. And as far as I know, "POK" was always safe to travel to on account of not being "occupied" at all.
But anyway. Bickering and name-calling aside, I hope that Jammu and Kashmir (all of it) stays peaceful always. Those people have had enough.
If Kashmir should go to Pakistan because its a Muslim majority state, then by the same logic Pakistan shouldn't have born. Because un-divided India was Hindu majority. Also Kashmiri hindus should ask for partition of Kashmir, they should use the logic of two nation theory.
India holds the distinction of successfully handling and suppressing two insurgencies, first in Punjab and second in Kashmir...You gotta give this to Indian government at least...way to go...The world knows and acknowledges the practical status of Indian Kashmir now and that is all that matters rest are just semantics...and frankly no one, inside or outside India, cares now what few Pakistanis think, wish or desire about Indian Kashmir...
UK follows Germany, Japan is saying Jammu and kashmir is peaceful and good for their citizens to visit. Its great success story for India. Can the same be told for Pakistan's badlands?
Pakistan's strategic assets will be itching to have some fireworks on .. Neither do they live in peace nor allow others to live in peace .."some people just like to watch the world burn"
@1984. He is referring to the United Nations resolution of 1948. Even on the Google Maps, Kashmir is shown as a disputed territory. May be you read stuff only from Indian Media and term it as "everywhere in the world"
@Indian It is part of history that at time of partition indian forces occupied kashmir by force, the muslim majority areas supposed to be belong to Pak since people of kashmir also wanted to be part of Pak, for the past 65 years Kashmiris are fighting for their rights isn't that enough to say that who's the owner of area, i wish you guys grow up now and face the reality!
@Zeux
We understand and respect ur sentiment . For you people , world was created by Allah after the invasion of Gaznavi and ended after Mughal rule . Don't know how many "for you" things are there on earth ?
@zeux If pakistanis really care about kashmiris then they should stop talking about it. Because the amount of credibility or even legitimacy pakistanis have left they further weaken kashmiri rights. The best that can happen to kashmiri people is lifting of AFSPA and if you guys stop sending your own children to die for 3-4 year then it will happen. Every person who is rational realises that India has the same position on kashmir that china has on tibet, Only that kashmiris enjoy a million more rights than tibetans.
Anybody like pakistan standing with anybody is bound to be doubted and humiliated. A country that gets daily bombed by US airforce talking about Human rights in other country is laughable. Except Punjab every province has rebelled in Pakistan.I could not have used softer words.
@1984: UN classifies Kashmir as disputed state. You can shove what others say about Kashmir. For us and for kashmiris, it will always be INDIAN-OCCUPIED-Kashmir
good news!!!!!!!! tourism boost is good for us.......the indian state of jammu and kashmir will definitely benefit.............
