The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has summoned the home secretary and capital city police officer (CCPO) to question them on the presence of the army’s heavy contingents in the city and explain why the police have to depend on them.
A division bench headed by PHC chief justice (CJ) Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth heard a writ petition filed by Muhammad Essa Khan. Essa said that only security and law enforcement personnel are allowed to enter the Cantt area.
The PHC had requested the Peshawar station commander to submit a reply during the last hearing. However, in Tuesday’s hearing, the deputy attorney general, Iqbal Mohmand, speaking on behalf of the station commander, requested the court for more time.
The bench also ordered that the junior army officers deployed on check posts be replaced by senior police officers. This is to reduce any resentment towards the army after incidents of soldiers misbehaving with women, children and senior citizens. The hearing was adjourned till December 4.
