Several local Jamat-i-Islami (JI) leaders were booked by the police for holding a public meeting at Chungi Number 22 on Sunday without getting permission from the District Coordination Officer (DCO).
The case was registered at the RA Bazaar Police Station under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO).
Potohar Divison SP Haseeb Shah confirmed that an FIR had been registered against local JI leaders under MPO Section 16.
He said that the local JI leaders held a public rally without getting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the district administration. The SP said the organisers of the rally sought authorisation from the DCO, but were denied permission to hold a public rally at Chungi Number 22, which is in cantonment area.
When asked whether the police had booked any senior JI leaders in the FIR, the SP replied he was unsure of it. He however said the FIR must have been registered against those who initially sought the NOC.
JI Rawalpindi Spokesman Malik Muhammad Azam expressed ignorance about which of his party’s member had been named in the FIR, saying that he had not seen a copy of the document.
JI Pakistan Chief Munawar Hassan, former MNA Mian Muhammad Aslam, Rizwan Ahmed, the candidate for NA-54, Maulana Abdul Jalil Naqashbandi along with many others addressed the rally at Chungi Number 22, which drew a crowd of hundreds of people.
No arrest had been made till the filing of this report.
