KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) coach-hunt committee will prefer hiring a local batting coach for the national team even if the candidate does not meet all the requirements, according to an official close to the matter.

The official added, however, that the candidate needs to have good batting credentials.

The committee, headed by PCB director Intikhab Alam, is receiving numerous applications from all over the country since it advertised for the vacancy last month.

Former captain Zaheer Abbas and former team manager Col Naushad are the other members of the committee aided by cricketer-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja.

As per the criteria, the applicant must possess a level-3 coaching course certificate besides having ‘working experience in a similar cricketing role with elite cricketers’ of five years. The committee is expected to meet soon after the deadline for applications on November 4.

The PCB currently employs two foreigners – Dav Whatmore (head coach) and Julien Fountain (fielding coach) in its coaching panel, while having former Pakistan fast-bowler Mohammad Akram as the bowling coach. This time, however, the committee wants a local coach for batsmen.

“The preference will be to hire a former Pakistan cricketer,” the official told The Express Tribune. “The committee is yet to review the candidates. It may favour a local candidate but he should have strong batting credentials.

“That candidate should also have at least some coaching experience and then the required experience can be overlooked. The target is to find a batting coach before the forthcoming tour of India.”

Akram was also appointed without following the defined criteria as the former Test bowler was preferred on the basis of his coaching experience with county sides.

Abbas has also recently advocated the appointment of a Pakistan-based coach, saying that services of a former great should be hired.

Former captain Salim Malik, who had to face a ban in connection to match-fixing, is among the notable applicants who have applied for the job.

However, the former batsman is unlikely to be selected due to having no coaching experience in his CV, according to the official.
