Let me explain: like other residents of other areas where thoughtless (but rich) neighbours have installed electricity generators that run on natural gas, we, the residents of Hazrat Gul Road, Lahore Cantonment, barely have enough gas to cook on when these generators are switched on during electricity outages, summer and winter.
All of last winter, our insta-gas water heaters, which would not only conserve gas, they would also be cheaper to run, failed completely due to low pressure. And since we had got rid of our conventional hot-water geyser, we were reduced to using electricity immersion rods, reminding me of my young-officer days in BOQs all across the country. Only this time around the immersion rods would not work until we switched our (expensive-to-run) diesel generator on!
Let us also note that since the pressure of gas is low anyway (unless you have friends in high places in Sui Northern in our case — wink, wink) many people, especially those with gas generators, have what is called a ‘compressor’ — yes the same gizmo that pumps whichever cooling agent your refrigerator uses — fixed onto your gas line but inside your four walls so that the gas lineman or inspector can’t espy it, and from where it pulls in far more gas than you are entitled to, depriving your neighbours.
Now then, when some of us moved into Hazrat Gul Road, we were advised to do the done thing here: buy gas generators and fit these ‘compressors’ on the gas lines and have a jolly time. They also told us that gas generators were banned by law. We did not follow their advice. And here we are, five years later, completely bereft of gas, even to cook on. Believe me when I say that it can take a whole four hours to cook a half-kilo of lentils, and sometimes there is not enough gas to fry an egg. I simply cannot understand how people can be so selfish as to deprive others of basic necessities. Shame on them.
Whilst we Pakistanis are so quick to blame the government for everything under the sun, have we ever paused to ask ourselves if we are keeping our part of the bargain — that of being good, thoughtful citizens? I mean haven’t we heard of corrupt households bribing corrupt metre-readers to fiddle the electricity unit count?
I can only say to Dr Hussain that just as the government has decided to enforce the ban on gas generators in Islamabad the Beautiful, it should enforce the ban in Lahore and other cities too. Imagine someone having luxuries like gas-run electricity generators when others can’t even wash with warm water or cook meals.
Talking of shame, there is much of it that should adhere itself to others in this country too. For example, on those who are even thinking of, as langar gup (a typically army term suggesting rumours within the army, in this case floated to test the waters) suggests, setting up a Field Marshal’s post for, you guessed it, the most indispensable officer who ever graced a general’s rank in the Citadel of Islam, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Let us recall that he is already on a three-year extension which is due to expire early next year.
And where did I pick this up? Giving up my self-imposed exile from TV talk shows for the reason that the channels do not pay guests for the trouble they take, and admitting defeat, I appeared in one last week where this subject was debated at length.
The reasons advanced for Kayani’s staying on as a Field Marshal are exactly the same as those given for his extension three years ago: he has fought the war on terror for three years; is experienced; has contacts with his US/Nato counterparts, etcetera. The question that I asked then was: is there no Lt. Gen. in this man’s army good enough to take over from Kayani? Has he fought the good fight all by himself so that there is no other senior officer who knows what is going on? I ask the questions again.
But let’s move on. This position, it is said, will be known as the Chief of Defence Staff, and will oversee all the three services. There will be two army commands (which exist on paper already), each under a full general, so that promotions to higher ranks open up to assuage the feelings of frustration and resentment among those officers whose promotions are blocked due to extensions in service at the very top.
Now then, whilst I have long argued that we are a very unique people indeed, in very many ways, leaving all the world behind in the complete zaniness with which we go about our affairs, this latest ‘cunning plan’ really takes the cake. Our defence budget is already way too high and will jump manifold if this new show hits the road.
I mean, will the army commanders have their own set of Principal Staff Officers and their subordinate departments: CGS; QMG; MGO; E-in-C, etcetera, etcetera? Will the army bureaucracy double from its present size?
And will the air force and the navy not ask that their chiefs be promoted to Marshal of the Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet; and for Peshawar and Sargodha and Karachi and Gwadar to have air marshals and admirals commanding them? Where will all of this end?
Well, there we go making fools of ourselves yet again. Pakistan stands at 145 out of 187 countries on the UN’s Human Development Index, please note.
P.S. I have always said that decision-making in the army is done by one man: the COAS, who is the army. There is no ‘College of Generals’ for the COAS doles out the (expensive!) QMG plots; ambassadorships, etc. Does this present tamasha not prove the point?

Great answer...brutally true....bitter truth....let us face it folks, we need to change ourselves first before pointing out faults at others...need real dry cleaning - inside out....shake our conscience instead of being a hypocrite...
@Sultan: I wish your thoughts & knowledge is as uptodate as your slang-laden & uptodate (but empty, meaningless) English. Piffle & balderdash! Carry on, dear! By attacking me instead of defending Kayani's poor record, you have shown how vain you are. Not your fault! Kayani's record is so non-existent that it is not easy to defend it. As usual I say "God Bless you".
@K B Kale:
More piffle from the land of balderdash!
What are the achievements of Gen. Kayani? He, assisted by ISI, continued to hide & protect Osama after the original sinner Musharraf was ousted, slept through the entire episode that eliminated him, under his 'leadership' the so-called 'world's best intelligence agency, could not detect plans of terror attack on Mehran Naval Base & allowed it to happen, under his 'leadership' TTP launched maximum number of attacks on military targets and finally in the tradition of Pakistani Army, he has created a new stooge Imran Khan who he will not win (just like IJI's Nawaz in 1989). Bravo Kayanii But he must be lauded for not imposing another (Field)Marshal Law in Pakistan. Jai Ho!
Thank God, you did refer to your days in the Army. Good or Bad ?. Well I wholeheartedly agree with you .on the business of misusing the Gas. Regarding the Langar Gup you got to give the credit to your darling Jiyala's sitting on top of the Hill. They gave him the extension & its them who want him around. At least call "A Spade a Spade".
@Lala Gee: I dont want to speculate about what might have happened cause one doesnt know. Ya things could have been better but things could have been worse aswell. I dont want to get into how Pakistani or Indian Generals for that matter have fared in wars.
My point was more that leaders who are selfless are required both in India and Pakistan and there havent been too many leaders who could turn down power so easily.
The Pakistani army in particular has produced some very power hungry generals.
@A J Khan:
KS cannot live without bashing our Army like many people cannot live without bashing judiciary....
Otherwise, KS is very right that we ourselves need to change....like JFK had once said - not ask what country has given to us , ask what have we have given to the country.....
Mr. Shafi. Sooner or later you're just going to have to use a word other than 'shame' in your headlines.

Much better and less melodramatic op-ed keeping in view your past writings. However, it amazes me when a person belonging to the armed forces chooses to show ignorance about the functioning and decision making process of Pak. Army. I am sure, most of the readers already know the purpose of 'Core Commander's Conference' where most of the important policy decisions are made after discussions, and COAS has, and always had, the final say - like Prime Minister in the present democracy. And this happens not only in Pak Army, but also in any other army of the world - 'Chief' makes the final decision. On a separate note though, as you mentioned your place of residence, I was wondering how a Major (retd.) can afford a place costing around a million per 10 sq. yards, where minimum plot size permitted under by-laws is 500, and most are much bigger than that.
@Reallity Check:
Nehru said, “I think we should appoint a British officer as a General of Indian Army as we don’t have enough experience to lead the same.”
Great comment. Had we had done the same, the sub-continent now would have been a much better and peaceful place. It is just because of the first British Pakistan army chief, who refused to involve Pakistan Army in the Kashmir dispute, that both nations are still hostage to this bone of contention even after the passage of 65 years.
You should import natural gas from the US. The country's awash with the stuff. We burn more of it off than we use. We could supply it at a price that could easily beat the cost of getting it from Iran via the mythical pipeline, presuming you could prevent the militants from blowing it up ever so often.
@Pacifica: Just wanted to add that Field Marshall Carriappa only became the first commander in Chief of the Indian Army cause Lt. General Nathu Singh Rathore turned down the post and recommended Carriapa when it was offered to him. Ive added a small excerpt of the conversation between Nehru, othe leaders and the senior Army staff post independence in 1948.
Nehru said, "I think we should appoint a British officer as a General of Indian Army as we don't have enough experience to lead the same."
Everybody supported Nehru because if the PM was suggesting something, how can they not agree?
But one of the Army Officers abruptly said, "I have a point, Sir."
Nehru said, "Yes, Gentleman. You are free to speak."
He said ,"You see, Sir, we don't have enough experience to lead a nation too, so shouldn't we appoint a British person as first PM of India?"
The meeting hall suddenly went quiet.
Then, Nehru said, "Are you ready to be the first General of Indian Army ?"
He got a Golden chance to accept the offer but he refused the same and said, "Sir, we have a very talented Army officer, my Senior, Lt. Gen. Cariappa, who is the most deserving amongst us."
The Army Officer who raised his voice against the PM was Lt. General Nathu Singh Rathore, the First Lt. General of the Indian Army.
I doubt this would have ever happened in Pakistan.
Had you discussed advacnes in the field of Gynecology in the modern day science, the article would have been complete. I wonder if your thoughts are also scatered to the tune of your writings...generators, compressors, field marshal, tv talk shows...and gynecology...
Most useless and incoherent article jumping from gas generator of his quarters to discusss some most important matters like Chief of Defence Staff (a new organization) for the armed forces of Pakistan. Media has made a joke of itself and all the other state institutions. Every anchor in the talk shows is pseudo Prime Minister, a Judge, a General, and running the country as if it was a computer gimmick.
@Munna Bhai: Correction, we've had TWO Field Marshals, not one.
The first was Field Marshal Manekshaw, in 1973, for his leadership in the 1971 war. The second was Field Marshal Kariappa, in 1983, the first Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, for his leadership in the 1947-48 war (First Kashmir war), Hyderabad police action, etc.
In both cases the criteria was leadership in decisive military actions, the same as in all armies around the world. You are correct that neither was a self-appointed Field Marshal like Idi Amin or Ayub Khan.
Yes, I completely agree, the gas shortage is due to the army and the people of Pakistan, not the present government's mal-practices. After all, 'strengthening democracy' needs a lot of gas.
Pakistan could follow India's example. We have had one Field Marshal (not self-promoted!) but no service extentions. Seniormost Lt Gen gets promoted to COAS. Same with CJI.
Pakistan army should divert 2 billion dollars annual funds used on making nuclear arsenal, on making high quality bigger diameter pipes that can be used to construct a pipeline to carry gas from turkimanistan and Iran.In few years pakistan will have enough fuel to catter its domestic and indusrial demands.The army owes too much to this country and that would be a best way to pay kaffarah.If army can really do that it would be a big pleasant surprise for the nation and after that!! (Yaad e Illahi....).
Astonishing, the bit about the Field Marshal non-sense. The stuff about the gas pressure was............just a load of gas, something we are used to and its very believable.
all conspiracy theories will end when the General goes home without taking further extension. He would go because the brotherhood would have lasted enough to guarantee post retirement peace and tranquility.

BRUTALLY TRUE, WE NEED TO REFORM
This is nothing but entitlement mentality of the upper echelon of the society. They think without them a country will collapse. If Kayani the great has done so many positives than he should also be humble enough to accept the minus of his tenure?
Will Pakistan ever own the army, or will the army continue to own us forever?
So I guess, we haven't hit rock bottom yet .. may be if we create new Chief of Defense Staff and half a dozen new Marshalls, Admirals etc, we might get there ! Its only a few thousand men more for each new super-sized post, a few dozen cantonment and defense plots and a few million dollars.. so what ?
Excellent article! You are simply superb but unfortunately we are thick skinned people.
