The Peshawar High Court (PHC) said that blocking the Cantonment area to the general public is a violation of basic human rights.
A division bench of the PHC served notices to station commander Peshawar Cantt and the capital city police officer (CCPO) in this respect.
The bench, comprising acting Chief Justice (CJ) Miftahuddin and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth, was hearing a writ petition filed by Advocate Issa Khan. The judges were told that all roads leading to Cantt have been blocked and no one is allowed to travel within the area except for army officers or other high-ranking officials.
Khan said that barricaded roads have worsened traffic jams and routes leading from the general bus stand to Hayatabad are overcrowded.
The station commander has been asked to submit a reply about why the roads are blocked and why he did not submitting a reply despite court orders issued to him five months ago.
Khan said that on Khyber Road police have set up checkpoints and any vehicle carrying more than three people is not permitted on the road.
