ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Wednesday appointed Defence Secretary Lieutenant General (retd) Asif Yasin Malik as the new chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), while Captain Junaid Younus has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD).

The appointments were confirmed by a Ministry of Defence spokesperson Narita Farhan who said that “Asif Yasin has been appointed by the prime minister from among some strong but appropriate personalities for the post."

Farhan added that notifications for both the appointments have also been issued and the appointees will assume their office with immediate effect.

Another source at the prime minister’s secretariat confirmed the reports, saying, “There were big names on the premier’s table for the chairmanship and MD positions but the prime minister has chosen Malik as he is the one who could handle the corrupt elements in the corporation with an iron hand.”

Earlier in September, Captain Younus was appointed as acting MD after former Chairman Rao Qamar Suleman resigned citing poor health.

Captain Younus has spent close to 34 years in PIA, having served as the corporate director before he was asked to fill in temporarily as the MD.
