DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A three-day curfew in North Waziristan was finally lifted after a jirga met the political agent of the agency, Siraj Ahmed Khan, in Miranshah on Monday.

The jirga included members of the Waziristan grand jirga and Waziristan Aman Committee, an official of the political administration told The Express Tribune.

On Monday morning, the political administration had relaxed the curfew till 4pm. Later, the political agent decided not to impose it until Eidul Azha, the official added.

The news of relaxing the curfew came as a relief to many who were stranded in Bannu since Friday.

“It’s such great news that the curfew is relaxed. I packed my luggage and rushed to catch a passenger coach. There was too much rush, but luckily, I found a seat,” said Asif Khan, who was heading to Mir Ali from Bannu.

Malik Riaz Khan, a jirga member, said that other issues besides the curfew, including the law and order, will be discussed in subsequent jirgas. This will make life easier in the days leading up to Eid as people can easily shop and do business, Khan said.

Normalcy returned and traffic could be seen on the streets while people rushed to the Miranshah and Mir Ali bazaars.

The curfew was imposed three days ago after militants attacked a checkpoint in Miranshah. One security official and two militants were killed. An aerial operation was launched in the Machis village and a curfew was imposed across North Waziristan after the incident.

Usually curfews are imposed in the area from 6am to 8pm.
