ISLAMABAD:
Bold and vibrant geometric designs, abstract calligraphy, European inspired city captures and subjective landscapes are some of the latest paintings featuring at the Gallery Louvre.
The diverse collection at first glance seems like the work of a mix and match of different artists; however, upon further inspection it is revealed that the artist behind the paintings, is all but one - Kanwal Zafar. Her solo exhibition titled “Know your Intuition” opened for display at the gallery on Friday.
“I don’t want to restrict myself to one kind of technique or subject matter, I want to paint whatever I am feeling in that one particular time of my life,” the artist said. Zafar is indeed a versatile artist who has been producing some intriguing work ever since she graduated from Fatima Jinnah Women University with an MFA in 2001. “It was after graduation that I found my own style which I call abstract calligraphy,” she said.
Though the collection is very diverse, one thing serves as a unifier - bold and vibrant colour. “When I was in school, our teachers would always caution against using paint right out of the tube, but that’s how I use my paints mostly because I adore bright colours,” said the artist, dressed in a very vibrant orange kurta kameez, convincingly.
She shared that her two inspirations, Wassily Kandinsky and Vincent van Gogh, also used colour and geometric shapes extensively.
Amid the abundance of geometrical shapes in the exhibition, one of the paintings that really stands out is actually an acrylics on canvas painting depicting a Parisian art cafe.
