A workable plan to fight terrorism

Letter October 20, 2012
A well-planned crackdown against the Taliban is the only way forward.

MANDI BAHAUDDIN: The government and security forces of Pakistan have failed to eliminate terrorism in the country. The terrorists have gained superiority and seem to be able to carry out an attack anywhere at a time and place of their choosing. The government has no writ in FATA and these have become no-go area for Pakistanis. Furthermore, the military deployed there seems to have no clear mission.

As for our religious leaders, they have become ‘thekaydars’ of religion and interpret faith in the way that suits their personal interest. In mosques every Friday, the ruling clique is blamed for the rot and labelled “agents of America”. Many prayer leaders in their khutbas show open sympathies with the Taliban.

The government is confused and seems to have no plan on how to deal with the terrorism threat. Can someone give some workable solution instead of just paying lip service to fight terrorism? Condemning the brutal attack on Malala Yousufzai and other female students is fine but it is not enough. A well-planned crackdown against the Taliban is the only way forward.
