NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed an air strike in Helmand province's Nawa district on Sunday, saying that three insurgents died and it was investigating reports that children were also killed.
"Two Taliban mine-planters were identified and targeted by ISAF from the air and killed," district police chief Ahmad Shah Khan told AFP.
"Three children, two boys and a girl, who were nearby collecting firewood were also killed," Khan added.
Farid Ahmad Farhang, a spokesman for Helmand police, confirmed the incident and said the raid killed two insurgents and three children.
Civilian casualties caused in NATO operations against insurgents are a sensitive issue in relations between the US-led force and the government of President Hamid Karzai.
Karzai often reacts angrily, arguing that such incidents turn people against his administration amid an ongoing insurgency by Taliban trying to bring him down.
Thousands of civilians are killed in the war each year, with the United Nations saying the vast majority of such deaths are caused by insurgents.

Rubbish. The American's targeted the Taliban who were planting IED's - the children were accidentally killed. The Taliban target civilians and have no reservations about targeting children.
There is no difference in Taliban's and US' and NATO's troops' attitudes of killings/slaughters to the innocent people especially children and women because in Pakistan Taliban are killing innocent people and in Afghanistan US' and NATO's forces are doing the same job very well and perfectly.... Then why only Taliban are being defamed throughout the world thru media especially in the Western and non-muslim countries and why not US' and NATO's forces like Taliban?????? And as far as Hamid Karzai's this statement is concerned "Civilian casualties caused in NATO operations against insurgents are a sensitive issue in relations between the US-led force and the government of President Hamid Karzai. Karzai often reacts angrily, arguing that such incidents turn people against his administration amid an ongoing insurgency by Taliban trying to bring him down." then Hamid Karzai when you will invite the enemies in your country and shall give them free hand to do any thing then why cry over innocent killings????? And as far as UNO's this stance is concerned "Thousands of civilians are killed in the war each year, with the United Nations saying the vast majority of such deaths are caused by insurgents." then UNO sees the statistical figures of killings then US' and NATO's forces killed more people than insurgents in Afghanistan....
This barbaric act of ISAF must be condemned in the strongest terms even if that's a result of so called collateral damage - which is in fact not. How come the soldiers targeting the mine planters could see them with the IEDs and couldn't notice the three children around them?
One side Talibans are targeting children just because they want to go to school and other side NATO is killing children just because they belong to this region.
