The data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, noted that the “plateau” or “pause” in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperature rose from 1980 to 1996.
The Daily Mail report quoted climate scientists – some argued that 15-16 years was too short a period to draw conclusions from, while others said that it was clear that the computer models used to predict future global warming were ‘deeply flawed’.
Professor Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, admitted that he and his colleagues did not understand the impact of ‘natural variability’, but he was convinced that the current decade would end up significantly warmer than the previous two, the report added.
The report quoted other climate scientists who said that the computer models used by the Met Office are flawed and that the climate is far more complex than the models assert.
Professor Judith Curry, chair of School of Earth and Atmospheric Science at America’s Georgia Tech university, was quoted as saying,
“Climate models are very complex, but they are imperfect and incomplete. Natural variability [the impact of factors such as long-term temperature cycles in the oceans and the output of the sun] has been shown over the past two decades to have a magnitude that dominates the greenhouse warming effect.
“It is becoming increasingly apparent that our attribution of warming since 1980 and future projections of climate change needs to consider natural internal variability as a factor of fundamental importance.”

@Ahmed: One explanation is a change in the North Atlantic current which has diverted warm water from the Gulf stream into the Polar ocean.
it's a fabrication by David Rose at the daily mail. the met office has already responded http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/
The global temperature swings between ice ages and temperate ages. Local temperatures are less predictable, although its obvious that you can't predict the actions of a 30,000 year global cycle from a handful of met stations over 16 years. There is a global rise in temperature, but it is a natural cycle that is in no way caused by people. If we only used measurements from the poles it would indicate a severe rise in temperatures, but if we took them from the UK they would show a slight drop over the last 20 years, that is because we are being exposed to more cold melt-water from the ice caps and less warm currents from the Mexican gulf. Global temperature changes do not work in a uniform blanket covering the whole Earth as one single phenominae, It is a 'patchwork' of different local weather systems and environmental factors.
@Jessica Yes but the Antarctic cap grew to it's biggest recorded a week later, so this fact alone proves nothing.
@KhalidKhan You can't disagree with the report and state that temperatures worldwide have gone up, when the whole report was based on temperatures measured worldwide, which, according to said report, have stagnated.
@Sarfaraz Temperature records only go back to, at a push, 150years ago (and the equipment has improved vastly since then). To say one year "has been the wettest/coldest/warmest/ year since records began" is therefore only based on 0.000003% of the whole of Earth's history. Pretty tenuous I'd say.
Actually the Met Office in London denies it has said any such thing and accuses the author of the original newspaper article (in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper) of not telling the truth. http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2012/10/14/met-office-in-the-media-14-october-2012/
No one believes the Daily Mail
This is ridiculous. The Arctic ice cap shrunk to a new minimum this summer - less than the average minimum over the past 30 years. Global warming is only getting worse. As people have said above, do not take anything the Daily Mail says at face value.
@Khalid Khan: Mr Khan, October was and never had been a cold month. November is the time when it starts getting cooler here. Having said that, I remember that May of the last two years have been touching 50 on the mercury.
@Fahad Raza tsunamis and earthquakes has nothing to day with the environment and climate. Now you should Thank me.
So like 8 in the last 15 years have been the warmest in Earth history. These are recorded temperatures and no speculation. So this is obviously also imagination. Or the Arctic, Greenland, Antarctic, Himalayas ice reducing in very significant numbers. Come on please...we all know Daily Mail is the most reliable tabloid in the world. Go and check its history please. Don't print it, if you want to remain a credible news site.
I totally disagree with this report. For the last decade temperatures throughout the world are on rise. It does not snow as much as it used to be and weather has gone mad at times unexpectedly. recently, we at Karachi has received unexpected rain and unexpected rise in temperature. October is supposed to be a cold month, but we are having as severe temperature as if we are in May or June. If it's not the global warming than we all going through a crazy weather era.
This proves one thing though.
We understand nature very very little.
Science is still a long long long long way from accomplishing anything substantial.
This also proves, human potential is unlimited.
I bet it has, no warming at all...the stats prove it!? Suppose that's why the Arctic Summer ice volume has decreased by 50% since 2007. Suppose that is why here in the USA the USDA moved the plant zone hardiness map northward! Suppose the extreme record breaking weather extremes here in the states is just normal. Another warmest year on record. Ocean acidification is still getting worse in the Northwest Pacific region here in the USA. Next time your in the food store look at the prices...had nothing to do with the record drought.
What on Earth have Tsunami's and Earth Quakes got to do with Global Warming? Incidentally, the South Pole (Antarctica) last month saw maximum ice extent ever recorded. Man made CO2 represents only 16 parts per Million, now you tell me how that is ever going to be catastrophic? This was only ever about a tax on fresh air, thankfully the scam is coming to an end, but not without a fight I'm sorry to say. All I would advise is to look at all of the information available and not just the propaganda.
Since the economic downturn we have all these Western studies backing lack of global warming. The attempt to hush up the problem so Europe and US can start polluting the world again could not be more apparent!
Every year our cities are breaking fifty year records, Arctic ice is lowest in the recorded history and we might see perma-frost melting soon while homes throughout Europe and US have started installing fans so the UK scientists can spare us the Coporate sponsored hogwash probably sponsored by BP, British Airways, GSK and others who continue to plunder global resources ruthlessly.
party then?
Siachin down in dolldrums ... hehe
Please stop using Daily Mail as a source. Quoting it is as bad as using wikipedia. Use studies from reputed, published, and peer-reviewed journals, or at least a reputable science magazine for stories on scientific matters. ET should learn from the waterkit saga, where it initially ran with the claims of Agha without any critical analysis.
yes global warming did... but not climate change :D !
No research reqd...........Ask u r elders they will say u.............
How can we take anything which comes out of the daily mail seriously? It's one of the most narrow minded publications in England!
This is like 'eggs are bad for you' and thirty years later 'eggs are good for you'. Why ? because we were reading the readings upside down.
This is rubbish, pleas go to the UK Met Office website and look at the actual report. It does not come to this conclusion. When you take stuff from the Daily Mail website, do your background checks first!
Then why are the polar ice caps shrinking every year? Why does it not snow as much as it used to? (I can say that about everywhere in Europe) Why was there no snow in some skiing resorts all year last year? Why are deserts expanding? Why is Greenland melting away? You can see the changes; what's the value of these reports if it's in front of your eyes.
Nothing so sullies the integrity of humanity as the subversion of science for the servitude of politics. Quietly releasing this story which is realistically a front page headline is truly suspicious.I truly hope ALL the parties involved with the Great Scam get exposed.
So no carbon tax malarkey for now. Gore can go back to invent more Internets.
"quietly"!!!!!!! well yes it was so quiet that even we, the students of UEA, also did not hear a whisper in the campus.
It definitely is a bad news for agencies and organisations which cash the "climTe change" cheque.
lol "quietly"
Al 'Doomsday' Gore must be so disappointed.
