LG elections: SCP asks for high court’s verdict report

Advocate General Sindh says he could not argue on the matter without going through the detailed judgement in the case.

KARACHI: The Supreme Court has asked the Sindh High Court registrar to submit the report regarding high court’s order directing Sindh government to hold local body elections. On May 18, the Sindh High Court while hearing a constitutional petition filed by a former district nazim, Dr Raheela Gul Magsi, had ordered the Sindh government to hold elections within 90 days in the province. The provincial government pleaded that as the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001 had lapsed, the system of 1979 had been restored. Under that law, the government had to again delimit the constituencies and till then local body elections could not be held. On Monday, Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard an appeal filed by the provincial government, assailing the court order to hold local body elections. The Advocate General Sindh, Abdul Fattah Malik, said he could not argue on the matter without going through the detailed judgement in the case, which has still not been announced.
