Two police mobiles were set on fire by a mob after a speeding prisoner van hit and injured a woman and her two children on MA Jinnah Road, said the Preedy police.
The incident occurred when the vans were on their way to Central jail from the city courts. One of them knocked over the woman and her children while they were crossing the road. A mob, believing that the woman was dead, set fire to two police mobiles which were escorting the vans from the court.
ASP Ali Asif said that the vans left before the crowd turned violent and that the police called the fire brigade to put out the fire. “The woman lives in the same area and was picking up her children from school when the accident happened,” said Asif. He added that they were treated at Civil Hospital, Karachi and that cases were being registered against those who set the vehicles on fire and against the policemen who were involved in the accident.
