Bomb squad veteran Hukam Khan, aged in his late 50s, successfully defused one device but was killed when a second one exploded as he tried to make it safe. Three police officers were wounded in the blast.
“The bomb planted at the roadside exploded when Khan was trying to defuse it,” Khurshid Khan, a senior police officer in Peshawar told AFP.
An intelligence official said Khan defused the first improvised explosive device (IED) but was killed while attempting to defuse the second.
Khan was shifted to Lady Reading Hospital after the explosion took place, while the police have surrounded the area.
President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday told the UN General Assembly that the country has lost more than 7,000 Pakistani soldiers and policemen, and 37,000 civilians as a result of terrorism in the country since the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
Earlier on September 24, a bomb planted on Frontier Road was defused by the BDS police in Sheikhan village.
The police was informed about the bomb, following which they cordoned off the area, diverting traffic from the road.

may ur soul rest in peace... u are an example of courage
@kanwal... Anyone (if has met Khan) would agree.. Khan deserves Nishan e Haider..
A BIG LOSS for KP's BDU. I knew this brave man since i started playing cricket with his son Akram Khan (also member of the bomb disposal unit) in our team at village. A number would say he was a brave person, but for me, he was the only Brave Official who could smell under ground bombs.. He escaped death earlier while defusing a bomb but lost his fingers (left arm) nevertheless, he continued and has defused more than 200 bombs. This is an unbearable loss for the Unit. i still remember when he told me " Khuraya (nephew) concentrate on your studies, i would have been chief of the Unit, had i studied after matriculation".
Give him Nishan e Haider.
Salute to heroes who are out there only to defend us against lunatics day in and day out! A great nation lead by great crooks!
RIP. I have some know-how regarding bomb-disposal. Due to advancement of technology used in time bombs and other such devices, even highly professional bomb disposal units don't diffuse bombs personally these days but detonate them either in blast-proof containers or errect walls on all sides using double layers of sand or concrete cement bags and blast them subsequently.
What a hero! Salutes to you sir!!
Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un Allah janat naseeb karay, Ameen!
@sgrr is Pakistan about compensations... is it all what pakistanis think about when there is a tragedy .. when there was tragedy in Karachi, the first thing that govt came up with was compensation for victims ... Money Money Money .. You guys are sick
While his sacrifice is highly praise worthy we need to seriously review what equipment & protection is provided to these brave men who are risking their lives for the nation. Looking at some of the other countries bomb disposal units, its extremely sad to see that our government has not given due importance to this department despite the highest risk they face while attending to such ongoing threats we are facing.
The government should compensate the family in a honorful manner, so that his family may live a repectable life.
He gave his own life to save others besides him. May Allah have mercy upon this brave soul.

Dear Bilour,
please donate the 100,000 dollars to purchase a bomb disposal robot. If you don't want to purchasse from the amreekan (it is your right), set up a project fund for scientists and students from some pakhtoon university and have them construct one. It is not rocket science.
He saved innocent lives. May he rest in peace, Amen.
Hukum Khan, indeed, was an honourable man. Gave his life to save others instead of those thugs who set the bomb to take the lives of innocent. God bless. A true shaheed.
now that's a true soldier and a hero...salute to you sir
