The Sabzi Mandi police have so far arrested over 130 people in the wake of violent protests that broke out over a sacrilegious film last week.
According to police sources, those arrested include Afghan nationals and people encamped in the outskirts of Rawalpindi.
“These people ransacked the toll plaza on IJP Road, looted cash and appliances before setting it on fire,” said Industrial Area Sub Divisional Police Officer ASP Khalil Ahmed, who added that the police have recovered five stolen computers and valuables from the suspects’ possession.
“Those who attacked the toll plaza were criminal elements who took advantage of the situation for their own gain,” he added. A number of suspects have been sent to jail, while others are still in police remand for investigations.
Meanwhile, the Sabzi Mandi police have also resolved three murder cases.
Industrial Area SP Ishaq Warraich, while talking to media persons on Thursday, said the police arrested Sarwar Khan and Muhammad Arif, both residents of Swabi, who are suspected to have killed a man and his wife over a family dispute. The bodies of the deceased — Muhammad Iqbal and Faheem Bibi — were found from a slum in I-10/1 earlier.
Similarly, another police team arrested Faisal Iqbal, a resident of G-11/2, and Shehzad Masih alias Billa, a resident of G-7/1, for allegedly killing Hafiz Zahid Rasheed, a muezzin of Jamia Masjid Syed Awais Qarni who was stabbed when he was caught stealing.
In addition, the police arrested a suspect who allegedly opened fire on a passenger bus on August 31, killing a man, Khalid Hameed, besides injuring several others. The suspect has been identified as Sarfaraz Mushtaq, who hails from Pind Dadan Khan.
